i won't really blame this on Dems I not only lived in Florida for 15 years from 2003 to 2017 mostly under Republicans. I also worked a lot of that time for FPL so i know better then the vast majority of people on these boards about hurricanes and power outages. And frankly infrastructure is a *****. For instance there was one year i was without power five out of six weeks. That was fun especially along with working 12 to 16 hour days dealing with upset people. A lot of people don't understand how much damage these storms can really do to the electric grid. Every morning we would have staff meetings and show pictures of the damage and look at mile upon mile of downed lines and 100 foot tall metal Transmission Towers downed stretching as far as the idea i can see.

Jesus holy Christ this thread is toxic. Can we not go five seconds without politicizing a national disaster and start pointing fingers and blaming people who had nothing to do with it and name calling everyone and their grandmother? It's like this forum is full of mental toddlers! What's important isn't who is in office or what political leaning they have, what's actually important is how we, as ALL Americans, respond to those in need!

Have you donated food or supplies to the organizations sending help to those in New Orleans or the northeast (which has seen record flooding from the remnants of Ida)? Have you personally helped someone displaced by the storm because they lost their home? No? Then quit complaining. If you have, then good for you and hopefully your contribution made a genuine difference to someone in need.

What we as Americans need to do is pulls our heads out from our collective rectums and remember that we are all in this together, like it or not, and we need to start acting like it. This tribalistic 'us v them' mentality will be the downfall of this country.

Wind does freaky things.

My moms house washed away, lot and all in Carla. The house next door was half blown away. But the remaining half was the bedrooms. The clothes in the closet were all in order, doors still closed, the shoes lined up on the floor, untouched. Not even wet.

People have no way to communicate to let anybody know they need help. When we had no electricity for 10 days at least we could buy gas, and run the cars to charge the phones.

The businesses like gas stations and grocers need to get some generators down there.

I see the right wing (as usual) cares more about "owning the libs" than about people in need getting help.

Presidents going to a disaster area creates undue stress on emergency response resources. Be a human being and wait a few days before pushing political agendas after disasters.

No one has been able to coordinate this well. Sandy also got more attention and sympathy in 2012 than most southern hurricanes. And while Nola floods regularly, NYC is not supposed to flood like that. So I can see the sways in focus. I'm still not buying the "Biden is neglecting New Orelans" mantra. Response would be no better up the previous admins, would honestly probably be worse.
The NE always gets the focus regardless.

I'm not saying Biden is neglecting this. In his mental state he probably doesn't even know a hurricane hit the US.

Yeah, hopefully you can finally convince NYC and the northeast to believe in global warming and take proper steps with regards to zoning, building codes and flood mitigation.

Almost a decade after Sandy and still getting caught with their pants down is on them and trying to blame this as if it's a surprise and GW's fault and not the fact that they haven't been properly preparing.

When you purposely build a whole city below the water level of the surrounding water, the only way you can drain away any storm surge or flood is with pumps. What about that is a surprise to anyone alive today.

When your electric supply grid was already shown during Katrina to be as fragile as it could possibly be to high winds, with electric utility crews from as far away as Canada showing up before FEMA got out of their parking lots, being instrumental in getting it back up and running, but would not be available during a pandemic, why would you risk experiencing that again?

When you're about to get hit by a storm predicted to be as bad, or worse than Katrina, and having experienced the fiasco of Katrina - - why wouldn't you get your arse out of there ASAP? Failing that; why wouldn't you use all your EBT credits to stock up on non-perishable food, water and T/P?

Next question; given the experience of Katrina and that particular area, why not mobilize rescue and damage mitigatin resources BEFORE the dang thing comes aground? Get them sorted and on their way from wherever in the U.S. before it hits so they arrive as soon after as is humanly possible?

Much of the storm damage to property is self inflicted, IMO.

My community allows building in the flood plain and in the water storage side of levees then wants FEMA to bail them out every time there is flooding. And the government subsidized flood insurance for people building on ocean waterfronts is just stupid.

IIRC, lower Manhattan is built on fill. Did they install levees and maintain them?

Pave over all the ground and you will get flooding.
Build below sea level and you will get flooding.
You can re-route the flow of water but Mother Nature always puts it back to what it was before.

And then go and blame "climate change" for our bad mistakes.
