The most religiously conservative Islamic state is long time US ally, Saudi Arabia and it has nothing to do with the Taliban. 15/19, 9/11 hijackers legally entered the US on Saudi passports. No country treats women worse than Saudi Arabia. Trump embraced the kingdom and professed his love of the people because they buy a lot of stuff sold under the Trump brand.

Afghanistan is a very poor country with no particular exports beyond heroin ( to Europe).

The majority of Afghans live in remote, rural, mountainous areas under tribal leaders. Goat herding and subsistence farming is the way of life. Electricity is optional. The majority of the people are illiterate.

The US invaded Afghanistan in 2001 to crush the Taliban. He was unable to do so and quickly embraced a counterinsurgency strategy to persuade the people to embrace western values. Despite pouring $trillions into the country for 20 years and in doing so, became the economy, it failed to achieve goals. Building roads to nowhere served no purpose.

Trump campaigned on exiting Afghanistan throughout 2016. It negotiated with the Taliban to do so in 2019-20. It executed an agreement with the Taliban on 2/29/2020 to reduce all forces by 5/1/2021 and to facilitate the release of 5000 Taliban fighters from Afghan prisons. In exchange, the Taliban was supposed to keep Al- Qaeda out. Despite the Taliban not honoring their side of the agreement, troops had been reduced to 2500 by the time Trump left office and the 5000 Taliban prisoners were released. What could go wrong?

Religion is a tool used since forever to control the masses and rationalize evil.

GOP has honed that weapon to a fine point. It is going to turn around and poke them where it hurts - at Election.

No? But women have it so much better over there. Right? I mean besides all the stonings and forced marriages and lack of education and lack of freedom to leave the house, they are living the good life. Free abortions as well (they may not survive the abortion because it will be in the form of a public stoning but hey at least they are available )

Exactly, it makes zero sense to me.
