Airlines have long had vaccine rules for pilots and cabin crew depending on the routes flown. A lot of international routes to tropical areas require a yellow fever vaccine- if you can’t fly an assigned route because you don’t have the yellow fever card needed to get into the country then it’s an unexcused absence from work and no paycheck.
Same goes for covid now if you’re flying international routes- if you can’t fly into a country because you don’t meet covid vaccination requirements then why should the airline pay you?
There's been a lot of focus on New Zealand and Australia lately in here. I'm also curious, what if this was Ethiopian Airlines? Or Air China? Or Qatar Airways? Or Air Algerie? Would we really be upset that Iran Air is requiring their employees be vaccinated?
Why are we 1. criticizing private companies for making policies that they see fit? Are we for freedom? They have the freedom as a company to do it. 1b. How is this different than anything else?
If Qantas said that they were eliminating vacation days, people would say "Qantas could do what they want, people should just go work for another company." But because it involves vaccines and we dont like vaccines, this is now important enough for us to get into Qantas affairs?
And 2. These companies aren't even American and these countries dont operate how we do. I'm just trying to understand here why this matters and how this doesnt go against the freedom mantra. Any Qantas employee who doesn't submit is free to leave and work elsewhere. Yes, the freedom even works in Australia. It is not work for Qantas or go to the gulag.
Freedom is only important when it aligns with conservative beliefs, didn't you know that?
