The CDC can require more specific reporting to them. Unfortunately, in May they decided testing of the vaccinated was no longer needed. Had they not done that it might have helped alert them that breakthrough infections and contagion were a very real thing.
Our state, especially the area health departments, does better than most with breaking down the stats, I do think it helps better shape public policy and, more importantly, community trust.
The CDC can request lots of things, the states do not, and have not, necessarily followed.
Personally I agree with you, all possible data should be reported, collected and disseminated. I also think we should increase sequencing. We should be a world leader in all these areas.

Yup -- I think that's why there is so much focus on the COVID patients on ventilators and in ICU's.
Our local pediatric hospital system posted their stats this week. It is not good for kids. So many on ventilators on ICU and being trated specifically for COVID.

are hospitals still getting a "bonus" for covid patients?
" Medicare has determined that if you have a COVID-19 admission to the hospital, you’ll get paid $13,000. If that COVID-19 patient goes on a ventilator, you get $39,000, three times as much. "
keep in mind...that $13,000 and $39,000 is on top of what Medicare would pay out anyway....a bonus

And if your patient dies the hospital gets $35K and the relatives get $9K for the funeral iirc.

Not how it works.
