You're half right. They do what they do. That's for sure. If you think their only motivation is money, you're naive. That's what pays the bills and is partly what provides for the lavish lifestyles. The other part - sociopolitical power - is the real reason that the people who get into that industry do it.
The industry exists for one set of reasons; the people in the industry are there for another set of reasons. There's not much overlap these days.
What the media supports is establishment power. Not Democrats. Not Republicans. Sure, sometimes, but it's tactical when they do it. The strategy is about keeping and growing establishment power.
For instance - can you name the one time that the mainstream media was showering praise on Trump? Using terms like "presidential" to describe him? It's when he was dropping bombs on Syria. Go Trump! Yay for war!
The media is pro-establishment, not pro-democrat or pro-republican or even pro-profit. Most people in the media have a left-wing bias, so if they
do support someone solely for political reasons, it's probably a Democrat.
Mika Brzezinski said on live television that it's the media's job "to control exactly what people think." She accidentally said the quiet part out loud.
They believe that. They believe it's not just their job, but their
right to manipulate you, and they don't do it for money. They do it because they truly believe that they're smarter than you and I and the rest of the public.
