My ISD started giving laptops to all students 12 years ago. At that time there was a $250 deposit per laptop. There were some complaints from parents with 4-5 kids.
How is a teacher not supposed to see and hear what goes on in a house when using zoom for teaching?
Do you really think they are keeping their surveillance limited to school hours. Yeah... Ok...
Many of these programs boast that teachers have direct access to the screens of their students, even after school hours are over. Teachers and administrators can hijack control of the computers remotely, closing problematic tabs and overriding their keyboards. Does that make kids feel safe?

IDK who all has access to each kids computer. I do know the last thing my DD who teaches middle school wants at the end of the day is more time on the computer.
If it's not your device, there is no reasonable expecation of privacy. Kids probably don't understand this, but parents certainly should.
Agreed, devices are usually (more likely always) issued with a parent signed student contract whereby they'd read and agree to any stipulations put forth (like replacement upon loss or theft, proper/ improper use).
Break the rules and you're accountable for breaking them (at least that's the way it used to be)...
That district deserved to be sued. Using a "webcam to track your physical laptop" is a flimsy outright lie.
Total and complete fabrication. You do not use a webcam to find your computer.
Glad the judge saw through that sham of an excuse.
I agree with the parents here. That school was definitely spying.
A minor addition to the laptop could have restricted the Networking ability of the device But no ,it will be a great ..GOT YA , in the future when looking for a job .
Laptops given to students during the virus were used to spy on them. Included the monitoring of chats and emails. Their rationale was they were looking for suicidal students.
Also noted that the wealthy with their own devices were monitored less.
Isn' there an equity issue there?
Were the students and parents told of this spyware infecting the laptops, and were they told that their privacy was going to be invaded and private conversations monitored? If not-LAWSUIT, and hopefully criminal charges against those responsible.

Given the number of child molesters and child rapists in our schools, I don't think any parent would feel comfortable with this.
