Most high schools are rated in part by how many Advanced Placement courses they offer, how many students take them, and the scores on the annual tests. These courses are by definition college-level courses that may feature adult-level content in courses dealing with the humanities. If parents don't want their children exposed until they have reached majority, then they may forbid the school from enrolling the child.

In any case, to think that children will reach adulthood without any exposure to explicit sexuality is unrealistic. Growing up in the buckle of the Bible Belt, I learned everything I knew about sex before puberty at the public library reading Everything I Ever Wanted to Know About Sex But Was Afraid to Ask, What Boys Need to Know About Sex, What Girls Need to Know About Sex, and many others. Before the age of ten, another child showed me pictures of hard-core sex. I could go on with example after example of how children were exposed to adult content in the 1960s and still grew up to be wholesome, productive adults.

Just as with other adult behaviors, parents need to introduce their children before they learn from other children or adults. Waiting until children reach majority to be exposed to the realities of adulthood does not equip them to handle situations where they may be exposed precociously outside their parents' influences. Unfortunately, those who seek to exploit children rely on their innocence to gain their trust. Children who are aware of specific dangers and what to do in dangerous situations are better prepared if they find themselves in a sticky situation, whether it is a stranger or a trusted adult.

They'll eventually find out about BDSM, too, so should tax dollars be used to buy graphic books on the subject for the school library?

The rest of your post is irrelevant. Because you haven't seen THIS book.
I doubt that will matter. Some people want to normalize everything and expose children to it at early ages.

It's called grooming.

Do those who are ripping the school board chair think she should have allowed him to continue?

The book most certainly WAS on the shelves of several school libraries in that county as well as a neighboring county.

It wasn’t just the text that was at issue but the extremely graphic illustrations.

I'll take your word for it. It sounds clearly inappropriate for a school. There should be an established process whereby concerns of the parents and the community are heard and acted upon, as I said before. If kids want to read pornographic graphic novels, they can get them from their older siblings or their friends or else read them on their phones.

The article stated the book was not on the shelves. Has been purchased but was not placed on the shelves for student borrowing.

There is. It's called attending school board meetings and voicing your concerns.

I don't know about The Very Hungry Caterpillar but the Bible is pretty kinky.

For example, you should read Ezekiel 23:20. You get to read about big weanies and buckets of ball juice. And there are plenty of others verses just as good as that one.

sounds like exactly the biblical sections a serial killer enthusiast would seek out with great enthusiasm.

“A graphic novel that was recently pulled from library shelves in the Brevard County public school system has now been likewise removed from Orange County public school libraries.”

“As reported by the Orlando Sentinel, Gender *****, then on the shelves of four local public high schools, was pulled from these libraries following the meeting.”
