I graduated from a top 1% public high school in the 70s in one of the most affluent towns in California and, as sort of a joke/partial send up of the whole concept, we elected a stoner girl as homecoming queen, and a funny looking guy as king. He was good athlete, and one of the funniest guys in our class, but he was still funny looking.
The other two guys and two girls on the court were more traditional beautiful/handsome squeaky clean examples. One of the the two girls was my across the street neighbor's girlfriend. My neighbor, also in our class, wasn't one of the two guys, so the pictures, etc. didn't include him, but he didn't care...it was no big deal (he was an athlete, and his girlfriend was a cheerleader).
Can you answer the question as to why homecoming king wasn't good enough for him?
He claims it was because the word 'queen' looked prettier on the sash than 'king' did.
Why does he get to take the crown away from a deserving girl?
In every instance I've ever heard of, including in my own Senior class, the King and the Queen were elected by the students....it wasn't something decided by some sort of community committee, nor by teachers, nor the school administration. Students chose who they thought deserved it. Taking the vote seriously or not is up to each individual student.

Women have worked to get equal footing -- which they now have.
This type of idiocy takes that equal footing away. Any male can identify as a female and get special treatment and inclusion to be selected for a female's job/honor/sport/whatever.
That's the issue. The fact that it was a homecoming contest is beside the point. It's a much, much bigger issue.
