So, what do you think of the Metaverse concept? Do you want to become part of it? Do you even know what it is? Do you care? I just read this opinion piece in the NYT and the author, Charles Blow, is very skeptical: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/31/o...-facebook.html

"Mr. Zuckerberg painted a picture of the metaverse as a clean, well-lit virtual world, entered with virtual and augmented reality hardware at first and more advanced body sensors later on, in which people can play virtual games, attend virtual concerts, go shopping for virtual goods, collect virtual art, hang out with each others’ virtual avatars and attend virtual work meetings.

That sounds absolutely ridiculous. And terrible. As with all new things, they appeal to some, maybe to millions, maybe even to most. But I have had to put my foot down, and I’ve actually been doing it a little at a time for a while now."

My question to you: Is this the death blow to social media? Or at least to Facebook?

Facebook: I've successfully reduced real-life social interaction, while simultaneously increasing vanity, narcissism, loneliness, privacy invasion, bullying, and depression.

Metaverse: Hold my beer.

Idk about you, but I've got a really bad feeling about this.

I already have an Oculus Quest and I LOVE it. It's just a different branch for FB, and yes, probably the social aspect of VR will take it's place, somewhat.

Did Zuckerburg just now get around to reading Ready Player One, or what?

To answer the OP's question: No, I'm not interested.

No thanks. I'll just do those things with real people. No living in a pretend world while rotting away on my computer screen. I'm doing everything in reality.

We are the fattest laziest country on the planet, we don't need a virtual world to make us more fat and lazy.

Also, the highest selling video games are usually violent, so unless there's an option to have virtual shootouts and fights for rank and game coins, this doesn't work.

We understand that Zuckerberg wants full virtual reality, but we just don't have the technology yet for a "Tron or Ready Player One" type reality. He is sacrificing social interaction and reality with trying to connect your brain to a dopamine machine while you stay home and get fat, but hey, at least your virtual persona is awesome.

LOL. I use mine for the exercise programs, and to visit with my sister in the next state.

Legal/liability protection for Facebook amidst the whistleblowers and other activities.

They can shift the bulk of their money to Meta and limit the exposure of Facebook as only a subsidiary.

It may be a year or two - but Facebook will have to pay a settlement of some sort for breaking the law. See Google/Alphabet...
