Youngkin was a corrupt private equity businessman but McAuliffe couldn't attack him on that because he himself was invested in the Carlyle Group (Youngkin's PE firm).
In all fairness, the opposing party almost always wins elections like this, and democratic turnout always drops off dramatically in non-presidential elections. Plus there is a lot of baggage from Biden for obvious reasons.
If anything, Youngkin feels like a weak candidate. He has zero charisma. Youngkin didn't win the election, McAuliffe and Biden lost it.

But in a solid blue state like VA, it should be a wake up call to Biden.
Because, in general, the democrat party has moved far, far left. If the democrat party retook their position in the center, future candidates would win, as previous candidates have.
Dems are part of a duopoly. If a left-wing dem wins the nomination, they will get attention just for sake of being at the top of the ticket.
Corbyn (like him or not) was the top of the Labour Party ticket in the UK and he was pretty much against everything that was in the UK's (elite) self-interest but he somehow took charge of a major party in the UK.
The point isn't for a left-wing dem to take over, but to stop Yougkin clones from taking over the Republican Party.
McAuliffe couldn't call out Youngkin because he himself was invested in the same PE firms.
That's likely correct.
People are hungry for something "new" other than Clinton era retreads and Silents like Pelosi and Biden continuing to dominate the political scene well into their 70s and even 80s.

So should Democrats drop these moderate establishment dems and move further to the left?
If you think that McAuliffe is a centrist, then I would love to read your definition of an extreme leftist.
On second thought, given the positions of SOME Democrats, maybe he is! Scary thought.
