For the domestic violence organizations I volunteer for, I think they would take exception to that statement.

More nonsense the police are there for protection, this isn't the 1700's. We have professionals that are best for handling assailants.

You would be dead wrong, literally. Try calling 911 and see how long it takes them to get to you on a busy Friday summer night at 2 am.

You can't sue them for taking too long to stop a home invasion and murder. Police in my area while they won't do much for theft they do respond to 911 calls takes them less then 5-6 minutes. I always want the option to be armed in my own home.

I could probably come up with hundreds of things "we shouldn't need" but we have them!

Dylan Roof couldn't wait more than 72 hours?

We have had women KILLED while waiting to take possession of their newly bought gun, even within the 3 day wait in some states.

Sadly, you're wrong. It seems counter-intuitive, but SCOTUS has ruled that the police have no obligation to protect you. Warren v The District of Columbia. I recommend you familiarize yourself with this case, since you're currently operating under a very dangerous misconception. Compounding the situation is the fact that many liberal cities have relagated the police to after-the-fact report takers. Pro-active policing is now frowned upon. Liberals have even come up with a phrase with negative connotations for police being pro-active. They're calling them "pretext stops" now.

I live in a small city. Our police are short-handed because they can't afford to pay as much as bigger places.

You make no sense, or misunderstand what I'm saying. I don't live in a crappy area of town where I have to worry about someone popping me behind the ear with a 9mm maybe you do?
