I do find it odd that they would stipulate the size of the company as of the date of enactment. Seems like it should be an inflation adjusted amount.

Because that is what Walmart and Target wanted. Walmart was at $560 billion as of early this year. Just below the $600 billion level. Target is at $100 Billion and forever under that target. That gives them both a huge advantage over their bigger rivals.

I don't think government should picking the winners. To me that is dirty politics. She may be one of the most honest but that is not saying anything at all.

Target and Walmart are not internet platforms. They have nothing to do with the purpose of this bill.

Wal-Mart could very well have $600B in sales in calendar year 2021.

Target is the 8th largest retailer at $100B in sales.

Also, not many bills make it all the way through Congress without change. Perhaps you can sic one of your favorite Critters on this obvious attempt to shield these 2 companies alone, at least by removing the "day enacted".

Almost everything I posted was from the story, copy paste with the link. So you are saying the writers have reading comprehension issues? . Its not curious that they picked some arbitrary number like $600 billion? You think it was just coincidence? I do agree that its not going to pass as it is. Too many other senators have too many "special interests" who will want a seat at the table. But Amy and Tom did do what they were paid to do. Help the big donors. My feeling is Walmart and Target went to these senators and were afraid they would get looped in whatever tech crackdown is coming since they both do eCommerce and large amounts.

The details of the bill below. Walmart and Target both have huge online platforms. Nothing I have read specifies that they cannot also be brink and mortar. Look Amazon has Whole Foods. Apple has Apple stores.

Most of the new rules would apply only to "covered platforms," defined as those with at least 500,000 U.S.-based active monthly users or at least 100,000 U.S.-based active business users, net annual sales or market capitalization greater than $600 billion, and deemed a "critical trade partner for the sale or provision of any product or service offered on or directly related to the online platform."

Walmart is the 2nd biggest internet retailer, Target is #6. Walmart has more online sales than eBay.

  1. Amazon $367.19 billion
  2. Walmart $64.62 billion
  3. eBay EBAY -1% $38.67 billion
  4. Apple $33.62 billion
  5. Best Buy BBY -1.3% $20.34 billion
  6. Target TGT -0.4% $20.23 billion

nope, I'm saying you failed to note that it was $600B in sales OR in market cap. Two uniquely different qualifiers.

It's certainly curious they picked $600B randomly.

But I believe the bill is aimed at tech/internet monopolies, not at retail in-person sales. Target is so far below the threshold as to not matter at all.

So, just because your "feeling" is something, doesn't thus make it so. Worth investigating? Sure. Claiming they're both corrupt or CROOKED! based on what info is available? Surely not.
