I find it utterly shocking that a parent would so clearly and audibly shout at their child to hit another player. I was a sports mom. I’ve sat on the sideline in a state of fury over fouls yet it never occurred to me to suggest violence. We used to get even by getting better at our game.
I'm not shocked. Stuff like this has happened before. We only know about this because it's Corey Benjamin's daughter.

I use to hear it when my boys were in football from some fathers and coaches. That was in the 90's. As I stated before over the years I have seen a much needed shift away from that kind of crap to much more sportsmanship attitudes all around. I have never heard it in basketball with my grands (maybe once from an opposing team in travel ball. The game was forfeited and that team sent packing). I have seen parents forcibly removed from the gym by police officers. My brother is an officer and has worked lots of games. He said it is unbelievable how some parents act and he has had to remove man and break up fist fights. We had one rival game where our players and parents had to have police escort to the bus and their cars. All that is bad enough but to encourage your kid in any kind of un sportsmanship behavior especially unprovoked assault is shocking and inexcusable.

I disagree. This attack would have ended up receiving attention due to the utterly random and violent nature of it being caught on film while the offender’s mother is heard shouting for her to hit her. The fact that her professional basketball playing father didn’t teach his child better sportsmanship is simply an aside.
Part of me thinks "she needs a good whipping". However, part of me thinks she might have gotten plenty of whippings as a smaller child. Who knows what kind a parenting she got. The mother has proven to be a horrible parent.
Who knows what her home life is like. She attacked that girl because her mother told her to. I wonder if she would have on her own accord. IDK if the other recorded attacks were provoked by her mom or not.

My daughter played Class I traveling soccer for about 10 years. Her coach, one of the kindest men to serve as a role model for these girls, had an ingenious method to keeping parents quiet: he requested before every game that parents switch sides of the field, and sit on the other team’s side. Believe it or not nobody ever declined this offer! Parents behave beautifully while sitting among the opposition. Best idea ever.
I'm not disputing that it was assault or whether she should be punished. Do you think a 14 year old should go to "prison" (feel better now) for punching another ball player? That was my contention, prison. If so then anyone who hits another person should go to prison, siblings fighting, drunks in a bar, spouses in domestic violence, all these nuts punching ff and airline employees. Every assault by adults or minors should be punishable by a prison sentence?
Prison would be rather extreme for a simple assault, unless there were aggravating circumstances. In CA "prison" is for more serious offenses. Sentences of less then two years are served in county jail. County jail and state prison are two vastly different things.
But because she is 14, if a judge felt Benjamin needed some incarceration, she would go to a juvenile offenders facility, not a county jail or state prison. But given CA's policy and attitude towards incarceration, she would be much more likely to go into diversion programs. Only if you refused to go to these programs, as in continually missing sessions, would she probably see the inside of a juvenile detention center.
And yes, people who physically assault people, knocking them out, breaking noses causing concussions, etc. should be going to county jail or face other judicial sanctions.

That is partly true, it gives the story more legs, but it is also because it is caught on 'tape' so clearly.

Prison is taking it a bit too far, but some time spent in Juvenal Hall would be beneficial and well deserved. The girl, as reports would indicate, has a history of this kind of actions and if she isn't straightened out soon she is sure to end up in a real prison or perhaps in the morgue.
I don't know if mommy dearest can be charged with anything, but you can bet the parents are going to pay a big dollar when the lawsuit hit. The apoligy letter from dad, that his high priced attorney wrote, isn't going to go too far in settling this thing. As soon at the assault took place, the attackers parents retained a lawyer, they know they are in deep trouble.
Let's let the legal minds sort this out and hope the girl doesn't get away with a slap on the wrist, that would be an injustice and would not do her any good, she needs to learn there are consequences for her actions before she gets in far deeper situation.
Perhaps mom could have a visit from CPS and lose her kids for a while, might make her open her eyes, but probably just make her more hostile, she is a far cry from being a good parent.

It’s absolutely insane. It’s no wonder the girl is like that.
I feel sorry for the kid that was sucker punched. She's the victim - not the sick black girl.
Sure seems like the real victims are conveniently/purposely forgotten so that the race baiters can flip the narrative to paint the perpetrator as the victim.

It’s more than that. The girl has been TAUGHT to react with violence when things don’t go her way. She is in no way prepared for life. She will end up in jail in no time with that attitude.
