Government creates problems to create solutions. This will give them excuse to throw more money at the schools, these underachievers, etc. They'll come up with all kinds of excuses as to why they need to throw money at everyone and everything and go and do it. That's their solution to everything.
The government has an incentive to perpetuate the problem, not solve it. So their solutions, at best, perpetuate the problem, if not make it worse.
Why anyone would trust the only entity in the economy that has a vested interest in never solving the problem to solve the problem, I have no idea.
Frankly I think we need to cut off underperforming schools. Immediately. Let them fail and go out of business. Stop propping up failure.
So your assumption is that if you don't letter grade learning then the kids won't learn?
I wonder if at the end of the term the kids in that kind of a system are any worse off.
Don't most school communities/stats have some kind of end of term assessment/test. I guess that will determine if this type of teaching is working or not.
Once again, here you are clearly demonstrating you haven't read up on this. It goes beyond letter grades.
This is what they want to do:
- Assignments can be turned in late and also incomplete and students can still receive a C on said assignments
- Students can retake assignments and tests as many times as they want
- Students can skip assignments and go back to them if they're "too stressful" or can skip them altogether
- Students won't be marked for being late or absent
- Teachers want to remove all D's and F's for current students that have them and give them at least a C-
They're saying the goal of this is to remind students that they all make mistakes in life and that everyone learns differently. While this is true, this is also setting them up for failure. College won't coddle them like this, and the real world/career world won't tolerate it either. These kids are going to grow up with a mindset that they can always half ass everything they learn and do. It's not healthy. And what about kids that actually enjoy learning and enjoy getting good grades to show off their hard work? Now you're holding those kids back to accommodate for the kids who will always opt to skip assignments or turn them in complete and still get a decent grade for it. Why you OK with dumbing down our children?

MMmm....mostly agree with what you said, but colleges and 'real life' work places are already on the equity is mediocrity path. Math is racist in colleges, and being on-time and completing work assignments where you are employed is considered being 'too white'.
Under woke-ism it's ok to be late, lazy, and lackadaisical at school and work.
Wouldn't SAT's and ACT's still be needed for entrance into a post secondary facility.
That was the old failed White Supremest way of doing thing .... Kinda like actually grading papers and doing school work. I about these CA schools even give the SAT/ACT anymore.
L.A. Times :
Nearly 130 colleges and universities in California do not require students applying for the fall 2022 semester to release their ACT or SAT scores, according to updated data from the National Center for Fair & Open Testing.

Sadly you're correct, the damage has already been done. I'm glad you brought up being on-time because I forgot that was another thing they want to implement at that school. Children who are late and/or rack up too many absentees won't have it count towards them anymore.
That Alhambra High English teacher needs to be fired.
If everyone in your class is getting Ds and Fs, you're 1) unreasonably harsh in your grading, 2) you suck as a teacher, 3) the students aren't putting in the effort, 4) something's wrong with the assessment, or 5) the pace of teaching is unreasonably fast for the students' abilities, or 6) the material itself is too hard.
All 6 of those scenarios lead to one conclusion: The teacher is incompetent.
Honestly, two years ago, I would have agreed with you. But the pandemic has changed everything. While we are finally back in the classrooms, it’s been a very difficult year for kids and staff. We’re facing challenges that we’ve never faced before, and if schools DIDN’T move to pass/fail, we would likely end up with a whole bunch of HS dropouts like we’ve never seen before. We knew this year would be tough… we didn’t know it was going to be this tough. I dont think next school year is going to be much better.
