"Polygamy or older men marrying young girls? Either may seem weird or downright distasteful to us, but aren't those just different kinds of marriage? If we declare the whole one-man, one-woman thing obsolete, how can we then draw artificial lines by age, sex or number of partners? Besides, who are we to doubt the capacity of two (or more) people to love one another enough to make a marriage work?"
I don't think you can make an accurate comparison between men marrying young girls and consenting adults, and being a polygamist is much more of a choice than being a homosexual, if that's what we're getting at. There's also probably a lot of complicated tax/benefit issues that would arise that would make having polygamy be legal not worth it, given the smallness of the minority that wants it. I think your article guy is stretchin' it.

Once again, I'm reluctant to open links. But the title DOES seem to back up my often-repeated 'rant' back in our 'multicultural' period on this forum, in which I said MOST of us, if we're honest, don't REALLY want every bit of every culture, from everyplace on earth, to appear here among us in this nation. We THINK that would be very sophisticated, but we're not being sincere. Much of it would be exciting...but much of it we'd find totally unacceptable. This article, in some ways, seems to bear this out.
After all, "Older men forcibly marrying young girls" is hardly a recent invention of reclusive Mormon fundamentalists. It's a time-honored tradition in MUCH of the world. Exciting and colorful to 'read about'? Maybe. But I don't think MOST of us would enjoy it happening in our neighborhood. The same goes for MANY attributes of MANY cultures across the world. We are, by and large, a fairly tolerant society...and MUCH more tolerant than many nations...but NOBODY is tolerant of everything....nor should they be.
Rape and pedophilia is the same whatever the white wash...
There are plenty of priests who defend the integrity of their heart and
the sanctity of their man-boy association. Of course, in every case where a
child is the victim... its a victim because it was refused the choice to say "NO!"
These perpetrators of such violence against innocence should be garroted in public
and their flesh fed to pigs. They don't even merit a funeral.
There is nothing so vulnerable as the mind/heart of a child and nothing so vile as
the degradation sourced in a person of trust.
God doesn't rape anyone, nor does He compel rape for any reason.
Let me just tell you from personal experience both in my own life and the life of a couple friends, the psychological damage that is done to a child who is treated in this way stays with us through our adulthood. We can deal with it so we are not sitting in a corner screaming non stop but it doesn't go away.
The anger that lives in my soul over what has been done to me and done to friends of mine, wells up in me in a way that frightens me at times. I have met survivors of abuse that are not angry, they are resigned and powerless, like they have no more fight in them. Its so very sad.
Polygamy between constenting adults though immoral should not be banned. Adults being the key word there. When a child is involved, all rights, to be a Mormon or Muslim weirdo or whatever religion or lack of it that you subscribe to, fly out the window. That crosses the line into victimization.
Polygamy is a victimless crime, child rape is not.

I think one of the concerns SOME people have is the social programs these people abuse. I used to work for an insurance company that had a population in Utah, they would both the wife and the sister wives as well as ALL the many many children. I frankly don't know how they stayed in business.
