The United States passed yet another sobering milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic as the number of 2021 coronavirus deaths surpassed the 2020 total.
According to the latest available data from Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. has reached at least 770,691 COVID-19 deaths over the full course fo the pandemic.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that the total number of deaths involving COVID-19 in 2020 was 385,343.
That means that at least 385,348 COVID-19 deaths — 15 more than the 2020 total —have so far been recorded in 2021, and that number will only rise in the days and weeks to come.

While the U.S. started to celebrate a decline of COVID-19 cases in September, those numbers have steadily started trending upward again. Last week, 29 states saw higher COVID-19 counts than the week prior.
A grim number of deaths that likely came from a laboratory.
That’s not too surprising given the big winter surge in early 2021 and the late summer delta surge. Thankfully the death rate seems to be coming down again.

Duhhhh COVID didn’t show up in the US in any appreciable numbers until March of 2020, and then took time to to spread. So it wasn’t really until summer of 2020 (6 months into 2020) where numbers picked up. Then vaccines didn’t show up until Feb of 2021 and a majority of the population didn’t get vaccinated until around the summer, all the while it was spreading. So not surprising that 2021 numbers surpassed 2020.

Well it should be surprising seeing that vaccinations started at the beginning of the year.
With that "protective" vaccine we should have seen less deaths.

Remember that it took a long time to get people vaccinated. By the end of March, the USA was only 20% fully vaccinated. We didn’t get to 40% until mid May. By that time the case rate and death rate were dropping rapidly. Some of it could have been from warmer weather, so it’s hard to know for sure. We do know that death and hospitalization rates are much higher for the unvaccinated. That shows the vaccines are effective.
