Vaccinated with what? when? what country did they come from? We know the Chinese vaccines are not effective, J&J not much more and all of them wane. But the biggest factor here is testing. People getting on planes are required to be vaccinated and are tested. So any cases of that population will fit the "was vaccinated" category. Based on ratios we already know, the vaccinated people are about 1/6 as likely to become infected. So the variant is likely highly distributed. In fact, the health authorities in these nations have already stated most infections are among the unvaccinated. Then again, most of the population is unvaccinated. It's complicated.
As an aside, the planes that had 10% positive covid passengers on arrival in Amsterdam - all those people were tested before they left and supposedly none of them were positive. Testing fraud?

Depends. Could just be the tests used. If Omicron has the mutations that they say than PCR and antigen tests that rely on 1 gene on the Spike protein may not detect it due to mutations. Currently PCR tests that test 3 genes are used to spot Omicron due to one gene always negative (so 2 matches 1 negative on these PCR tests indicate Omicron).
Mild or not, it is still Covid which is scary to get and puts vulnerable populations at risk which makes me sad and scared. The only solution is to shutter businesses so that every life can be saved. Our heroic politicians are truly miracle workers in the fight against this horrible virus.
The UK has closed its borders to certain countries and they require a ten day quarantine at a hotel. The people have to pay for the quarantine, which seems unfair, but at least they are in isolation. The US isn't requiring any quarantine! what good is it?
It’s interesting to me all the initial cases detected in Botswana were vaccinated. Interesting because in Botswana only 20% have completed their vaccinations and less than 40% have started.
I just love these stupid names they are coming up with for the thousands of "variants" they tell us each week is going to kill us unless we comply. It's getting old.
Every time they cannot hide the 'breakthrough' cases, they will blame a new variant and insist on more boosters. It will never end.
There was discussion a few months ago that viruses become more contagious but less virulent as they mutate...is that accurate or is it internet nonsense?
That is generally true but it's like spinning a roulette wheel. Although less likely, it is certainly possible for a new variant to be more virulent.

Our understanding of viruses and disease is not complete but basically you have a few things to consider.
The basic point of consideration is the pathways the virus disrupt. SARS-CoV-2 reacts with the ACE2 enzyme which is used in the Renin–angiotensin system which regulates blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance, and vascular inflammation. So short of this virus mutating into a completely different virus, it will always effect this system.
The other could be it’s ease of infectivity, but if this variant is out competing Delta, it should be at least as infectious.
The other pertains to immune escape, but this variant has the most mutations on its Spike yet so it will be especially efficient at evading vaccine produced antibodies and some Monoclonals. People with natural immunity should fare better.
I don’t think it’s safe to say a virus becomes milder. Instead, when a virus becomes endemic, prior exposure leads to better management and containment. I.e we adapt to the virus.
