From our founding until ~1913 we only had a Federal income during the war. We didn't have much welfare either. With the technology we have nowadays we don't need it. At least not from the federal government, let the states decide.

Why do we need tolls when we already have a gas tax? A user tax. Hard hit times, we adjust and live within our means. That's why one saves.

btw The hard hit times have been caused by government meddling in the free market and failing miserably at managing the market. Why would anyone want to give money to the very same people who ruin the economy, in order to make it "work better"?

Yes.

Limit taxation on a federal level to only that which is necessary for the government to fulfill it's constitutionally enumerated functions..... basically national defense, immigration and border control and maybe some certain infrastructure projects that the states cannot accomplish on their own.

I'm all for a flat tax in this regard, everyone pays the same percentage of their income in taxes......no deductions, no exceptions.....but I'm also flexible on the type of taxation that gets implemented, the limits how how much and for what purpose is more important than how the taxes are levied.

Virtually everything else gets handed over to the states.

Don't like the high taxes or low public services in your state?!

Then vote with your feet and move to a state that's more to your liking.

No one paid it though.

Those were top marginal rates.
