Not really, since honestly the Bright Futures program help inflate the cost of college on top of student loans. To really make college affordable, get the government to stop offering merit programs like Bright Futures. I saw the scam that was these merit programs when I was in University over a decade ago.

It is a monopolization of betting by the state, which is also a vol tax that is paid by taxpayers who are stupid enough to give "free money" to FL. Lottery programs would be better if it was privatize with more choices if that is what people want.

Think about this: Why it is ok for the government to gamble and make these decisions but not people?
Florida in state tuition is pretty darned reasonable compared to other states even without Bright Futures factored in.

Most Bright Futures recipients that I know of entered college with significant dual enrollment and AP credits earned for free during HS. So they wind up graduating in 2 or 3 years AND have a significant portion, if not all, of their college education paid for through Bright Futures.

People can and do complain about anything and everything I guess. I can't imagine favoring a luck based lottery system over a merit based scholarship award system.

If I want to play my luck, I'll buy a lottery ticket. Lucky people get rich that way, too.

Florida KNOWS where that money goes. The other states, who knows where it goes. Good luck finding out.

and blathering socialists are unable to distinguish degrees of an issue.

deal with extremes only, a taste of salt in chicken soup does not make it salt soup.

we need so many glasses of water each day to promote health, a flood ravaged New Orleans people died, socialists heads exploded, can't figure out if water is good or bad.

Catch is FL been overcharging for stuff for years, and it will only go up due to demand.

And I know plenty of Bright Futures recipients who came out of college with high loan debt due to all the other stuff colleges charge on top of tuition. College would be cheaper for all if we stop doing merit based systems since it is only making the colleges charge more money due to an increase of "Free Money" from the state.

Remember, you are vol paying for a tax and supporting big government. No thanks from me.
I have no idea what all of these extra surprise charges are that you are seeing in Florida colleges. Are you talking about the credit overages that some kids get when they stay in college longer than their program of study - retaking classes, switching around majors a lot? Even those charges are pretty well spelled out.

That's awesome.

it's truly important for kids to understand that getting into 6-figure debt for college is about the stupidest thing you can do, generally speaking. Most will never make it back and will be paying that student loan off for decades.

Lab fees and books.

My sons books were nearly $1,000 for used books for one semester.

Well yeah, those things are in addition to tuition but something is better than nothing. I would not have been able to send all three kids to college for as cheaply as I did without those scholarships.
