Then by that definition, pistols are "assault weapons", knives are "assault weapons", etc.
They keep repeating these monikers for the AR-15 for the same reason they still keep saying Kyle Rittenhouse carried a gun across state lines and he was a white supremacist.
Facts do not matter and if they repeat the lie long enough...most people are too lazy to investigate and will just take their words for it as truth.

For crying out loud, the 5.56 M-16 (the full auto version of the AR-15) was chosen by the military in part because it was less powerful than the .308/7.62 M-14 and the older .30-06 M1 that had been in use and was easier to handle (plus they could carry more ammo)
