I never knew Maine did not have public high schools available in all towns. Very interesting case here. 12/8 is hearing date.

VT and NH also have towns without high schools. Over the years, various towns have combined their school districts. Some towns do pay tuition to nearby other towns or to private academies to take their high schoolers. But I don't know of any religious schools that are involved in this cross town scheme like in the Maine story you posted. Will be interesting.

"Congress shall make no law regarding an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...."

(later modified by the 14th amendment to include a prohibition on states and local govts doing the same thing)

A government that takes tax money from its people, and then spends it on non-religious schools but discriminates against spending for similar purposes any on religious schools, is doing exactly what was prohibited by the 1st amendment above.

Hopefully the Supreme Court finally has the wisdom to end the war against religion our various governments have waged for nearly a century.

You are correct for NH on this. The school I went to was an area high school that covered 6 different towns. The one my son went to covered 5 towns. Each summer, I would get a call from the school district to make sure he was still going to school there so the town knew how much money they needed to send to the other town. It was a set figure per student - I won't say how much because he graduated 11 years ago so I'm sure it's gone up.

In many New England towns, there just aren't enough kids to support a high school. When my son was in Junior High, there were about 180 kids in the entire school (sixth, seventh and eighth grade). These days that number is down to around 120.
