A combination of greed and an over-supply of "information" that people don't know what to do with.

I picked something else. The media has done more to divide us than anything else.

Social class. They are the ones that break down the communities between the wealthy, middleclass and poor. The social elite take all the tax money to fund their roads and schools in their communities and then leave crumbs to the poor and middle class. At the same time, the poor will shoot themselves in the foot. Someone in the community becomes wealthy and opens up a store or other business and it does well, many of the poor will rob it and force the guy to move out along with his revenue and it's one of the reasons why the poor places will remain poor.

If we had a free press, the problems would have been ended before they started.

It is the MEDIA!!!!!!!!!
True, this is very true. Malcolm X tried to tell us back then how the media manipulates the public. How they will make an innocent man look guilty and a guilty man look innocent. I also find it funny that in the past movies and TV shows, the media was looked at as another villain. Look at Spider-Man and the Bugle and how the media was determined to make Spider-Man the villain. In Die Hard, the media is what put John McClain in danger.

Answer is all the above. It has always been it will always be to some extent however race being one of the lesser but is being exploited by the leftists to divide people.

What needs to addressed, is what do all people have to rally around and share in, the answer to that is freedom and individual liberty, and there is a authoritarian movement in this country to indoctrinate people to give up this, and to indoctrinate people to believe that the nations founding is flawed and irredeemable and that socialism/ communism should be brought forth instead.

If this is allowed to continue, one day what will divide people the most is those that want to keep the constitution and current government vs those that wan to end it and bring in some sort of "democratic socialist" government, and if that happens there will be no turning back to the demise.

I personally think politics is currently our biggest division in this country. There is so much of a tribe mentality these days when it comes to politics. I feel like with things like race or religion, you will be shunned by somebody with a different political view. For example, if you can be a Christian and a conservative but you might have a liberal in your church who hates you because you are a Republican, even though you both have your religion in common.

I feel like it wasn’t always this way. I feel like both Republicans and Democrats were more in the center 20 years ago, but now both parties are shifting further in opposite directions.

What do you think? And when do you think the shift happened?

Democrats.

Their entire political philosophy is built around division.

Well yes and no, the left wing of the party yes, democrats who are not left wing then no. There was a time that while there were difference in certain ideology about how to continue the country there was common based ground at certain core values of the constitution, now these days not so much under the leftist side.
