Had a copy of an 8th grade test from way back when.
Today's high school grads couldn't pass it! Many college grads also.

Could be because even when I went to school the teachers were from the top 10% of their class. Now they are all from the bottom 10%. And at that time there was no education major.
IIRC, most people ended their schooling at 8th grade. The well off could continue to high school and college.
The one thing I do remember is that most everybody I came into contact with knew how governments worked. I never heard of lobbyists. Every congress person came home to the district and made the rounds of all the civic lunch clubs and union halls. They had to explain proposed legislation, including all the pros and cons of each alternative.People were looking for solutions, not someone to blame.
Now they all just cater to their own teams and the ignore the rest of their constituents. IMO, that's what is doing the dividing. Most people are reasonable. If they got the straight story perhaps all this rancor could be stopped.
