But as the pandemic wore on, it became clearer even to risk-averse moms and dads that children were at little risk of serious illness from COVID. And as vaccines became freely available across the country, it became clearer that moms and dads could all but eliminate their own risk of serious illness if their kid brought the virus home to them from class. Even so, many schools still stayed closed, disrupting families for months. The reckoning came in November in Virginia when parents’ exasperation flipped a state Biden had won by 10 to Glenn Youngkin. Americans were ready for normalcy in schools again, it seemed, and blue states were no exception.

So now the interests of Democrats and their cronies have diverged. Dems need the schools to stay open but some school districts and teachers unions are still eager to go remote despite the mounting evidence that Omicron isn’t a serious threat to the vaccinated and that kids have suffered terribly from being out of class:

Biden and the Democrats will do what they always do: put the interests of the teacher's unions ahead of children and families.

They ARE screwed in the midterms. And if they allow yo-yoing school closures again for the next year, the bloodbath is going to be even worse for them.

How will schools be staffed when 25-40% of the teachers are absent due to testing positive, another 20+% absent due to quarantining due to exposure, and another significant percentage who have said, "Enough is enough. I'm outta here!" and left? There already weren't enough subs to staff the schools during previous surges. This one is the biggest so far, although thankfully not as deadly as the ones before.

What kind of instruction will children receive from the warm bodies who are put in front of classrooms, assuming that they can be found? Already movements are being made to allow people who have not earned college degrees to be used as emergency classroom teachers.

Pennsylvania is trying to make it easier for schools to find daily substitute teachers

Carthage School District adopts plan to attract substitute teachers

Whitmer signs bill expanding who can substitute teach amid shortage

I sense that there are no satisfying answers to any of the questions raised by responses to the pandemic.

Well unfortunately Biden has no such plan. He thinks if he shouts loudly enough the virus will get scared and go away.

School closures cost the Democratic Party the Governorship in Virginia, and almost in New Jersey. It will be interesting to see what else it costs them, this year.

Yup some schools are staying closed and most schools are opening.

Last March 2020 I was furious when our Governor shut all state schools when we had 15 cases of COVID.

This isn't federally mandated or even being recommended.

Unlike last March 2020, this is not a national directive.

Most definitely it should be up to each school board. Some communities may not see the surge and may not need to....others may be struggling with staffing of everything from bus drivers to lunch ladies.
