An imminent report from Michigan’s auditor general is expected to show that deaths due to COVID-19 in nursing homes in the state were undercounted by about 30%, bringing to mind the drastic undercount of deaths in New York facilities revealed last year.
Auditor General Doug Ringler is expected to release the full report next week, detailing the vast undercount of deaths due to COVID-19 in state long-term care facilities, the Detroit Free Press reported. While his report is expected to put the undercount at 30%, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charlie LeDuff, who argued in court last year that the state underestimated the death toll, said that figure could actually be as high as 42%.
