Ukraine and Russia are both Orthodox Christian nations. They are also both run by corrupt oligarchs. There is a LOT of inter-marriage between Russians and Ukrainians.

When I traveled in the Soviet Union and Russia NOBODY blinked an eye, or even asked the question whether one was Ukrainian or Russian. In fact, I was curious and asked the question of people I met. Never heard a disparaging comment by either side.

Ukrainian and Russian people are NOT going to fight each other in a war.

The soldiers might, but as soon as soon as it becomes apparent who the victor is the fighting will cease quickly.

The people of both countries have little loyalty to the oligarchs that run the respective countries. They are NOT going to die so some RICH person can maintain power.

After all those years of Communism and now the oligarchs......the Who said it best. "won't get fooled again.

But both countries live under Totalitarian regimes.

It would be all true, if not for Ukrainian nationalists part - alas.

That part was pretty much suppressed/absent during the late Soviet period.

But now they are the ones stirring all the trouble between the rest of Ukrainians and Russians.

They never really had those "nuclear weapons" to begin with.

All the advanced technology that Ukraine had ( including those nice ships and airplanes) was built/maintained via the central power in Moscow.

So that's the reason "Ukraine" abandoned those nuclear weapons as well; they wouldn't be able to maintain them independently.

Do Americans actually think that the US has the capability to prevent a Russian invasion of Ukraine? The US couldnt even prevent a Taliban re-take over of Afghanistan. More importantly, the powers in US government know full well that they cant stop a Russian invasion. So what is the point of all this bluster?

Nobody has said that the U.S. can prevent an invasion. The U.S. is just making sure that an invasion for Russia would be as costly as possible.

America is not going to engage a Nuclear Power directly. Americas Political Elites may be greedy and bellicose. However, they are not suicidal.

How's that exactly? Biden has been purposely vague in describing the actions he'd take. He and all his spokes-idiots opened up the thesaurus and just repeated the word 'significant," “severe” and “enormous” in as many ways they can, being as purposely vague and ambiguous as possible. I'm sure Putin is afraid of the handful of limp overcooked pasta noodles that the dotard Biden might fling at him, after Putin takes possession of Ukraine with a "minor incursion."

I wouldnt think the Russia wants to really bother with a military invasion of Ukraine anyway. I think they (rightfully so) want NATO to stop moving to its doorstep and get out of the region. NATO never should have added those eastern European nations. What would Americans do if Russia joined a military alliance with Canada and Mexico? If you dont think that is okay, then you support Russia's attempt to get NATO away from them.

The US should be negotiating a deal to promise to not allow the Ukraine in NATO as well as pull NATO out of Eastern Europe.

That would have a trickle down effect, If Hunter were to no longer be a member of the Burisma Holdings Ltd BOD, without his input that corporation would surely go out if business, leaving thousands without jobs. Then the Big guy would lose 10% of his income and those trips to the ice cream store would cease. What are a few lives and billions is cost compared to that..?

It's not just an understanding, it's a signed treaty commonly called the Budapest Memorandum.
Here's a link to the United Nations page holding the treaty.

China has separately sigend a similar document with the Ukraine.

It does not specifically state that the US/Great Britain/Russia would declare war or offer military assistance if anyone attacks the Ukraine.

Here's a viewpoint from the Ukraine.
