AP Article:
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is pledging to tackle rising traffic fatalities through a national strategy aimed at reducing speed, redesigning roads and enhancing car safety features such as automatic emergency braking.

Breitbart:
Buttigieg sees addressing those dangers as a top priority, and getting people out of their cars and into public transport or alternatively on their bikes is one way to start.

AP Article:
Buttigieg said his department is embracing a new “safe system” approach urged by auto safety advocates to bolster initiatives, underway in several cities, that seek to eliminate fatalities by taking into account more than just driver behavior.

See the difference when you go to the valid source...
The AP is the valid source...

I guess it was when you actually read the entire article.

Over the next two years, he said, his department will provide guidance as well as $5 billion in grants to states to spur lower speed limits and embrace safer road design such as dedicated bike and bus lanes, better lighting and crosswalks. When roads become safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, that opens up transit options overall and can lead to fewer dangerous cars on the road, he said.

The strategy recommends pilot programs to study and promote greater use of speed cameras, which the department says could provide more equitable enforcement than police traffic stops.
Lower Speed Limits - Check
Using Speed Cameras - Check
Pushing Public Transportation - Check

Is the AP still a valid source for you?

There's still over 100 just floating there waiting to be unloaded.
Less restrictions on getting that supply to where it needs to go would be the best idea.

From the article: "Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg vowed Thursday to stem rising traffic fatalities by imposing a host of fresh restrictions on everyday drivers while boosting those who choose to walk or use bicycles.

To that end he seeks more dedicated bus and bike lanes to get people out of their cars, retimed signals to favor pedestrians, enhanced speed cameras, greater traffic law enforcement and lower speed limits as part of the plan.

Buttigieg told the Associated Press new federal data being released next week will show another increase in traffic fatalities through the third quarter of 2021.

He believes the third-quarter numbers were expected to point to another sizable increase in deaths compared with the same period in 2020, adding to a half-year traffic death total of 20,160 that already was the highest half-year figure since 2006.

“It doesn’t look good, and I continue to be extremely concerned about the trend,” Buttigieg said in a phone interview with AP ahead of the strategy’s release on Thursday.

It urges pilot programs to study and promote greater use of speed cameras, which the department says could provide more equitable enforcement than police traffic stops."

So, reducing freedom of the average American in the name of safety..... Where have we heard that before?

How many of these traffic fatalities are cause by people under the influence of alcohol and drugs, or were texting and driving? We should be addressing those things, none of which would be solved by adding bicycle lanes everywhere. And get ready for these new and improved speeding cameras, where I'm sure if you're a mile over the limit, you'll get a nice fine in the mail..... 1984 style.
"and lower speed limits"
Wasn't it clinton who tried that and put a 55MPH limit on ALL Interstates?

How long did that last?

" Getting people out of their cars"

As more and more move OUT of cities, working from home, taking college courses from home, etc. there will be less driving in city and urban areas.

The South is growing like crazy and the north LOOSING seats in the House, from those leaving the north, Both retirees and those I mentioned above.

A perfect storm of things of absolutely no interest to me, and no benefit to almost anyone. In some cities, an efficient transit system can benefit many. In most places it’s a waste of money.

Pffffftttttttttt
Ive noticed in my area, red lights are timed and set up to cause traffic, if you get caught at one red light, you will also get red lights at the next few lights down the road, its crazy that they are timed this way, its like they are trying to waste as much fuel as possible.

Also, speeding tickets have nothing to do govts being concerned with our safety, they are strictly for generating revenue.

Unsurprisingly I am against every one of these items.

Especially the lower speed limits. WTF is wrong with this administration?

The stupidity of Beto's proposals are mind blowing. Crashes are up because of far reduced enforcement of the laws on the books and our revolving door justice system. Drunk driving, reckless driving, and distracted driving are visibly happening much more than just a year ago. I witnessed a drunk plow into a row of parked cars with his big old 1970's boat of a car. Suspended license already, couldn't hardly walk, no insurance(in our "mandatory insurance" state FYI). Police came and arrested him, and a couple hours later the tow truck arrives and starts working on the three smaller parked cars he'd smashed all together and totaled. A couple hours later he's out already and back for his car, looked over the damage and drove it away before the tow trucks had even finished cleaning up the mess. And Buttgig's fix is to mandate standard equipment in cars that won't let it operate if it thinks the driver is impaired? Oops I used mouthwash in the morning now my car won't start? I swerved to avoid an animal in the road and now my engine cuts out in rush hour traffic? The offenders don't need to be accountable anymore and everyone else must suffer? What a stupid bunch of dog doo!
