This was suicide by cop, plain and simple.
The police did not shoot the man because he had a box cutter in his left hand. The man had his right hand in his pocket, and then abruptly pulled out his right hand holding a shiny silver cylindrical object which the police took to be a possible firearm. It is obvious to me that the shooting victim initiated suicide by cop by trying to make them believe he was pulling a firearm out of his right pocket. This is obvious.

This video explains why the police shot the man and how he suddenly pulled something shiny and silver out o of his pocket, CAUSING his own death.
They didn't shoot him because of the box cutter. They shot him because he suddenly yanked a cylindrical silver object out of his pocket, acting like it was a gun.
The guy was walking away from them when he was shot. The cops regarded that act as a snub.
Assume they let him walk away with a knife in his hand, and he stabbed the next person he encountered. Then you would blame the police because someone else was injured or killed.
Funny. If the roles were reversed and the op had a guy coming at him with a box cutter, he'd scream like a little girl to the cops "shoot him! shoot him!".
