The World Health Organization says overuse of gloves, “moon suits” and the use of billions of masks and vaccination syringes to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus have spurred a huge glut of health care waste worldwide.

The U.N. health agency reported Tuesday that tens of thousands of tons of extra medical waste has strained waste management systems and is threatening both health and the environment, pointing to a “dire need” to improve those systems and get a response from both governments and people.

“Part of the message for the public is to become more of a conscious consumer,” said Dr. Margaret Montgomery, technical officer of WHO’s water, sanitation, hygiene and health unit. “In terms of the volume, it’s enormous.”

Let's face it. The COVIDians care far more about their risk of catching COVID and their miniscule risk of death from COVID than they do about the environment. Their selfishness and hubris know no bounds.

Prior to covid there were warnings about overuse of antibacterials and that it could cause antibiotic resistant bacteria. They sure did drop that quick. No telling how much damage using antibacterials to fight a virus will do.

Another example where the leadership is late to the game. Some of us have been talking about the mask waste for months.

Every time I walk around my neighborhood full of Dems, I see discarded masks on the sidewalk.

Yep. In addition to the bio-medical waste caused by the endless wearing of useless cloth and paper masks, I would like to know how much trash in general has increased because of the pandemic.

I would wager the amount of plastic and paper generated from people ordering takeout alone has at least doubled since this nonsense started.

I only saw one black discarded one during a 3.1 mile walk around the local lake yesterday. About everybody here, Republican or Democrat, has better sense than to wear masks to the park or elsewhere while outside.

I'm sick and tired of having to clean up used masks on my lawn and sidewalk. Not only that, but it potentially exposes me to all sorts of nasty germs and maybe even COVID. Selfish is definitely the right word to use when describing the idiots who think the world is their personal waste receptacle. It's not a political issue. It's an issue of some people being stupid and inconsiderate.

I see discarded masks in parking lots all the time, along with fast food waste. Same unhealthy group.
