She is actually not that far left. She wasn't an advocate of Bernie Sanders or progressives or their policies and she sparred with Rosie O'Donnell who was more Left. Whoopi was a hard time defender of Bill Cosby far after everyone else stopped supporting him. She wasn't critical of Trump in 2016 that much, but only later.

But on the show, as moderator, she likes to defer and ultimately back up Sunny Hostin, who is pretty Left and woke, over the conservative sitting at the table.

She can get a wrist slap mainly because she is an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award legend, more so than her generally left views. Basically, if she was a nobody, she would likely be cancelled. And, for being a black woman probably. Yet, our media was super harsh on Janet Jackson some 18 years ago, and now the media (or ABC specifically) will do the opposite and will likely be very light on Whoopi.
