Part of that is how a certain segment of the population thinks and teaches the children. Some educators hate USA and love socialist/communist countries and teach only the good about those countries and form of government while only focusing on the negatives about USA and its form of government.
Personally I think everyone should stop with the medal count by country.
Anyway winning the Olympics for the US doesn't make you a patriot. It's just sports.
Now, that figure skater is only 19. She had to renounce her US citizenship to represent China. It's just gliding around on ice, for crying out loud... She still has her whole life ahead of her. But she can never be a US citizen again. Once you renounce, that's it.
There's currently a record number of people renouncing US citizenship. Mostly older people living abroad trying to avoid paying taxes. It's a big decision.
China have a history of appealing to racial ties to overseas Chinese. According to Lee Kuan Yew, former PM Singapore, during the Cold War yrs China routinely radio broadcast to ethnic Chinese living in other Asian countries encouraging them to organize and rebel against the governments.
The Malaysians must be suspicious of Deng. There were underlying suspicions and animosity between Malay Muslims and Chinese in Malaysia, and between Indonesians and their ethnic Chinese. Because China was exporting revolution to Southeast Asia, my Asean neighbors wanted Singapore to rally with them, not against the Soviet Union, but against China.
Asean governments regarded radio broadcasts from China appealing directly to their ethnic Chinese as dangerous subversion. Deng listened silently. He had never seen it this light: China, a big foreign power, going over the governments of the region to subvert their citizens. I said it was most unlikely that Asean countries would respond positively to his proposal for a united front against the Soviet Union and Vietnam and suggested that we discuss on how to resolve this problem. Then I paused.
Deng's expression and body language registered consternation. He knew that I had spoken the truth. Abruptly, he asked, "What do you want me to do?" I was astonished. I had never met a communist leader who was prepared to depart from his brief when confronted with reality, much less ask what I wanted him to do. I had expected him to brush my points aside as Premier Hua Guofeng had done in Beijing in 1976 when I pressed him over the inconsistency of China's supporting the Malayan Communist Party to foment revolution in Singapore, not Malaya. Hua had answered with bluster, "I do not know the details, but whenever communists fight, they will win." Not Deng. He realized that he had to face up to this problem if Vietnam was to be isolated. I hesitated to tell this seasoned, weather-beaten revolutionary what he should do, but since he had asked me, I said, "Stop such radio broadcasts; stop such appeals. It will be better for the ethnic Chinese in Asean if China does not underline their kinship and call upon their ethnic sympathy. The suspicion of the indigenous peoples will always be there, whether or not China emphasizes these blood ties. But if China appeals to these blood ties so blatantly, it must increase their suspicions, China must stop radio broadcasts from south China by the Malayan and Indonesian Communist Parties.
It would not be beyond imagination that China got these US-borne athletes to betray the US using financial compensation and racial sympathies.
Are the ChiComs paying big bucks, threatening relatives in China or both?
We are not talking about losers going to play for another country. These are top level athletes. Hu even gave up her US citizenship (I don't know about the others)
My feelings are both, money and threats.
So they want to play or perform for their ethnic motherland...so what? Plenty of other americans also gave up their citizenships to support their old countries. And plenty of non-americans come and play for the US. Why are you making such a big deal about it? It's a personal choice and no, nobody is threatening anyone's family member. Don't eat up fox news like it's the new bible....
Seems China doesn’t allow for dual citizenship so officially none of these foreign born athletes can legally have a dual citizenship with China. How much does their Chinese native parent play in their decision and also brings up questions about their parent’s loyalties. Is their loyalty to their Chinese heritage or to the Chinese Communist Government? This is a valid question since some of these athletes will be attending US universities. With recent events exposing Chinese nationals attending US universities shown to be members of the Chinese military and or spies having a Chinese loyal of mixed parentage attending American university could become another method of spying.
Get over it. It's just a sporting event. No one is getting hurt (except maybe some wimpy americans' pride). If you don't like it, don't watch it. Nobody is asking anyone's permission. These athletes are all legally doing what they want. Don't you support their freedom of choice? I hear there is some vitamins that help with bruised pride. LOL
China is an enemy of the United States threatening our economy and killing hundreds of thousands of us with their virus. Gu Ailing is a pawn in their propaganda war against the US and against democracy. To the extent that she willingly, knowingly cooperates, she is a traitor. She is the Jane Fonda of her generation.

Eileen Gu is a gifted athlete, a beautiful young woman (she also works as a model) and dedicated to her sport. I couldn’t care less what team she is on. Watching her perform that amazing maneuver and her brilliant smile after was captivating.
Not dual citizenship. She gave up her US citizenship.
That would strongly indicate some sort of preference for one over the other, I think. But you do you.
