https://www.cbsnews.com/news/irs-id-...urns-backlash/

From the article: "The IRS on Monday said it will stop using face-recognition technology to authenticate taxpayers when they create online accounts. The decision comes amid a backlash from privacy advocates, taxpayers and lawmakers against the image-based system from verification company ID.me.

The IRS said the shift away from use of the facial-recognition technology will "occur over the coming weeks" to avoid disruptions during tax filing season, which is already facing a backlog of returns and paperwork. The plan had drawn criticism among civil liberties advocates and ordinary taxpayers over concerns that the system — which requires users to upload their ID and submit a selfie or video chat with an agent — could provide troves of personal information to hackers."

I'm glad to see some common sense still exists. You don't give the government an inch, because they'll take a mile.

From an earlier written article, :https://www.cbsnews.com/news/irs-law...oftware-id-me/

"The lawmakers said that using a third party to verify taxpayers' identity endangers them by compiling sensitive information into a biometric database that would be "a prime target for cyberattacks." They cite a 2019 incident in which a government contractor's computer system was breached, exposing thousands of Americans' faces and license plates."

To my surprise, the Congressmen involved were Democrats. Kudos to them!

Any ideas how much the IRS spent on implementing the technology that they will not be using? Perhaps a focus group comprised of customers (aka the American taxpayer) would have provided some insight? Saved a few million?

I had to go through through ID.me to get unemployment in CA when covid shut us down so I've been through the process. That's 10 hours on hold to speak to a live agent that I'm never getting back, and a lifetime of wondering where the heck that info is going to wind up.

The more we rely on third party anything the more of a hacking target we become. How many times do we have to suffer before learning that simple lesson?

In reality, an illegal alien advocacy group found out that their clientele could not illegally get others refunds with this system in place and gave Brandon a call.

Ahhh. No biggie. When you're spending someone else's money, no big thing. Well, in this case, spending the serf's money.

Just want to let you know that it is still up and running, did my taxes the other night and turbotax directed me to the IRS site to get information and it then required me to send a driver license and a photo selfie to proceed.

So I backed out and sent the return in by mail instead, but they haven't ended the overreach at all it is still there.

They probably spent a good $100M because, of course, Government, and Government overpays for everything.

Id me gave me all kinds of problems when I tried to use it. Went through the steps, uploaded the front and back sides of my Drivers license and and it would just stay at loading for as long as I cared to wait for it. I let it run for a really long time a bunch of times over a few days. Never did get through it. I'm filing extensions.

Lots of fraudulent refunds go to prisons and other key Democrat constituents.

Also, you can't demand more ID for tax refunds and no ID for voting.
