Gu is planning to compete in Tuesday’s ski slopestyle event, in which she’s achieved top-three finishes in most of the World Cup events she’s entered. She’s not expected to win gold in the event, but she also wasn’t expected to win gold in big air, before she unleashed a new trick and did just that.

The above is what I thought. Gu wasn't expect to win. As far as how she was able to compete for China given she's not a Chinese national. Jeremy Smith (Chinese national hockey team) has said renouncing his US citizenship wasn't required. But it doesn't matter what deal her mother cut with the Chinese government. Gu is on their team. This is about money. Smith is playing for China because it was part of the deal he agreed to when he signed on to play for a professional Chinese hockey team. Smith was never going to make the USA team, the Chinese National team was never going to win the gold and nobody was going to be asking Smith about nationality.

With regards to Gu: Beijing would be hosting of the Winter Olympics which presented her mother with a unique marketing opportunity for Gu. There would be limited endorsement dollars competing for the US given she wasn't expected to win. But she didn't need to win to earn millions. What she needed was to be on the Chinese team. With the right marketing she would earn her money before the games began which is exactly what she did. The 50 million in endorsement deals were inked prior to the games starting. Had she not won...nobody would be asking questions, she would collect her millions and be off to Stanford. Take the money and run.

But then a funny thing happened. She not only won the gold but did so in a spectacular fashion.

And why would be that?

"Gu will compete in three freestyle skiing events: big air, slopestyle and halfpipe. She has not finished lower than second place in any of those events at major competitions over the past year."

From the article:

In January 2019, still just 15 and representing the United States, Gu won a World Cup event in Italy in slopestyle. American coaches knew that she could be a breakout star at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

O.k. the potental was there but the 50 million in endorsement deals were inked prior to the games. Something Gu never would have landed in the States. Gu didn't need to win to earn millions. What she needed was to play for China.

Default Ice Hockey Team China, made in America

https://14nooor.net/team-china-made-in-america/

Quote:
“Captain China” was born in Vancouver, and his goaltender is from Michigan. Their teammates are the son of a US Olympian, and guys named Kane and Schultz. They were almost disinvited from their own Olympics, spared embarrassment, but at the end, they made it, to the National Indoor Stadium on Thursday, to host Team USA.

They’re the most fascinating team at the Winter Games, a mishmash of mostly North American hockey players with adopted Chinese names. They represent a country that doesn’t allow dual citizenship, and a team that rarely speaks that country’s native tongue.

They played the first Olympic game in program history on Thursday, and got bludgeoned, 8-0, by a group of American collegians.

...

And does he have a Chinese passport?

“Ah,” he said with another smile. “You gotta talk to the Chinese staff about that one.”

China is buying the Olympics

Default Nathan Chen blasted as ‘traitor’ on Chinese social media after 2022 Olympics gold

https://nypost.com/2022/02/13/nathan...-olympics-win/
Quote:
The 22-year-old Chinese-American was labeled a “traitor” on the social media platform for choosing to represent the United States, and was even told to “get out of China.” After his victory Thursday, some on Weibo complained that Chen was “too white” and Americanized, citing a long list of examples where they thought Chen was “insulting China” with his actions.

...
The Yale student put his support behind American ice dancer Evan Bates’ condemnation of China’s human rights abuses in an October interview. At the time, Bates came down hard on China’s “awful” treatment of the Uyghur people. The US did not send any diplomats to the Winter Olympics in Beijing because of the “egregious human rights abuses and atrocities.”

I am so glad that China is losing it's ass in no ticket sales, no hotel stays, no restraunts etc

Screw them

Nathan Chen was born and raised in America. He is most certainly not being a "traitor" for competing for his homeland. And he's not "Chinese-American." He's Asian-American, or just American.

Yes Nathan Chen may be of Chinese descent but he is American. Some in China don't under the difference between ethnicity and nationality. Also because China is a dictatorship the Chinese President cannot be seen as the leader of worldwide ethnic Chinese people the way the Prime Minister of Israel is the leader of the Jewish people because Israel is a democracy.

Don't worry. China isn't hosting the Winter Games for profit......The games are already a huge success for China.

shes dual citizen, china allow talented individual to have chinese passport and keep her US passport, just look at China hockey team. she already make tens millions before she represent china, now she achieve super star status in China, would earn more next year.
btw her earning is mix of US and Chinese sponsor, such as louis vuitton, tiffany, Beats by Dre, cadillac, oakley, Vogue, Victoria Secret, Red Bull, china bank, china telecon on and on.
she have about 20+ sponsor, each sponsor pay out about $2.5 million USD/year, give her about $15+ millions USD AFTER tax and other stuff, thats 2021 income. since she earn 1 gold, 1 silver, likely another gold or silver, next year her earning will likely reach $50-100 millions USD. Make her one of the highest payed athlete, and she just turn 18.

how many of ya willing to get another citizenship for $20 millions / year, and thats on the low side

this is from 2021, think how much she will make in 2022-2023

Eileen Gu has reportedly made a whopping $42 million in endorsements since the start of last year in a telling revelation that vindicates her controversial move to China
“She’s going to be as big as Yao Ming was,” said publicist Jeff Ruffolo. “These Olympics are going to be her NBA.”
