If the Omicron led Pandemic continues on its current more benign and declining course, then we may soon enter the endemic phase. And if that is similar to the global Influenza experience, then that may reflect the resultant medical and political response.

It's ALWAYS possible that "a particularly bad strain" of ANY virus can emerge. THAT'S HOW VIRUSES WORK. They constantly mutate.

Why are you all acting like the way this thing evolves is new, or something? Seriously. Everyone's in this trance where all the commonly known characteristics of everything medical have evaporated, and have been replaced with political opinions or occasionally with themselves, but as some new revelation or something.

In other words, you're acting like this is new, and/or you just learned it and expect everyone else to not know it yet, but it's been common knowledge my entire life and I assume yours, too, yet here you are, acting like it's new information or something.

It's REALLY, REALLY weird.

The emergence of the different and more benign Omicron demands a different medical response. The "I told you all so" moment may have finally arrived for the anti-vaxers.

Those have varied by locale and over time everywhere in the world. In most places they all dropping with the more benign Omicron. Our local death rate is dropping. From about 3% for the longest time, and now more recently 2%.

I guess the question then becomes "How do we define endemic?" and why aren't we there already?

No state has a statewide hospitalization issue.

To its peak, Omicron alone was responsible for 20,000,000 cases (Dec 1 to Jan 20). It should be noted that until Biden was sworn in, the total was "only" 25MM. Since Dec 20 (3 weeks after rise started) there have been 105,000 deaths. That's a lot, but it indicates a fatality rate of 0.5% now. That's 1/3 of Covid death rate under Trump.

Fauci has been giving general and very broad opinions and recommendations on a national level. As every locale varies with their Pandemic effects, and those vary over time, more local opinions and recommendations are needed.

It is easy to look retrospectively and talk about how HIV spreads. There was a time when we all gloved, masked and gowned up for AIDS patients.

I see a lot of "the science has changed" from the authoritarians on here.

What I'm not seeing is anything resembling "you were right on that initially, and maybe we shouldn't be so hard on those questioning the government-approved science."

Or "the science has changed and always does, therefore we shouldn't be too quick to dismiss that which we initially disagree with."

Nothing like that. Just more authoritarianism. Excuses for the people who were and continue to be wrong, and no credit to those who were right.

I don't understand people anymore. They don't seem to believe in anything other than winning, whatever that means.

Agreed with everything except the political part. EVERYTHING About covid has been political from the beginning until now and into the future...

"general and very broad opinions"

Don't wear a mask.

Wear a mask.

Wear two masks.

Don't wear THAT type of mask.

Get vaccinated.

Get a booster.

Get another booster.

Get your kids vaccinated.

These are not "general and very broad opinions." They're specific and they're enforced. They're dictates, carried out by rank and file ideologues who enforce it at the social level.

You have to learn to drop the titles and whatnot, and just look at what PEOPLE are doing. Fauci isn't any different than you or me. He's no saint. He's not infallible. And he's in an extremely powerful position in an extremely powerful government. WE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO TRUST HIM.

And we certainly shouldn't be making excuses for what is, at best, ineptitude on his part.
