French researcher Luc Montagnier, who won a Nobel Prize in 2008 for discovering HIV and more recently spread false claims about coronavirus, has died aged 89, local government officials said.
Mr Montagnier died on Tuesday at the American Hospital of Paris in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a western suburb of the capital, the area’s city hall said. No other details have been released.
Mr Montagnier, a virologist, led the team that in 1983 identified the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes Aids, leading him to share the 2008 Nobel Prize in medicine with colleague Francoise Barre-Sinoussi.

As Covid-19 spread across the globe and conspiracy theories flourished, Mr Montagnier was among those behind some of the misinformation about the origins of the coronavirus.
During a 2020 interview with French news broadcaster CNews, he claimed that coronavirus did not originate in nature and was manipulated. Experts who have looked at the genome sequence of the virus have said Mr Montagnier’s statement was incorrect.
Even though they claim that it's misinformation, that hasn't been proven either way at this point.
Asked by the CNews interviewer what the goal of these molecular biologists was, Montagnier said it wasn’t clear. “My job,” he said, “is to expose the facts.” While stressing that he didn’t know who had done it, or why, Montagnier suggested that possibly the goal had been to make an AIDS vaccine. Labeling the virus as “a professional job…a very meticulous job,” he described its genome as being a “clockwork of sequences.”
“There’s a part which is obviously the classic virus, and there’s another mainly coming from the bat, but that part has added sequences, particularly from HIV – the AIDS virus,” he said.
Montagnier also pointed out that he wasn’t the first scientist to assert that the coronavirus was created in a laboratory. Previously, on 31 January 2020, a research group from India had published a paper suggesting that aspects of the virus bore an “uncanny similarity” to HIV. Taken together, the researchers said their findings suggested the virus had an “unconventional evolution” and that further investigation was warranted. While the researchers subsequently retracted their paper, Montagnier said they had been “forced” to do so.
In February 2020, a separate research paper published by scientists from South China University of Technology suggested the virus “probably” came from a laboratory in Wuhan, the city where it was first identified.
So these view views expressed very early in the days of COVID by multiple virologists. There was no agenda in him and others making this claim.
He won a Nobel Prize for discovering HIV - so he would know what HIV looks like, and he (and others) said that COVID-original is similar to HIV.
Probably because it was created in a lab and they were experimenting with many viruses known to be infectious in humans, to build this frankenstein virus.
What's interesting to me on this subject is that something needed to fight HIV was being heavily considered in some vaccines (not Moderna or Pfizer). That would lend credence to the position taken in the OP that COVID-original has similarities to HIV. I am not sure if any final vaccines used the AD5 vector.
Some of the Covid-19 vaccines currently in development could increase the risk of acquiring HIV, warned a group of researchers in the The Lancet medical journal Monday, potentially leading to an increase in infections as vaccines are rolled out to vulnerable populations around the world.

The researchers warn of a “cautionary tale” from efforts to create an HIV vaccine over a decade ago, where a promising vaccine candidate actually increased the risk of some men catching the virus.
The vaccine made use of a modified virus — called adenovirus 5 (Ad5) — as a vector to transport some of HIV’s genetic material into the body.
Exactly how the vaccine increased the risks of HIV transmission is unknown, but a conference convened by the National Institutes of Health recommended against further use of Ad5 as a vector in HIV vaccines (Dr. Anthony Fauci was lead author of the paper outlining this position.)
Ad5 is used as a vector in some Covid-19 vaccines — Science identifies four such candidates that are currently undergoing clinical trials in various countries around the world, including the U.S., with two in large scale phase 3 trials ongoing in Russia and Pakistan.
Certain COVID-19 vaccine candidates could increase susceptibility to HIV, warns a group of researchers who in 2007 learned that an experimental HIV vaccine had raised in some people the risk for infection with the AIDS virus.

The ill-fated HIV vaccine trial used an engineered strain known as adenovirus 5 (Ad5) to shuttle into the body the gene for the surface protein of the AIDS virus. In four candidate COVID-19 vaccines now in clinical trials in several countries, including the United States, Ad5 similarly serves as the "vector" to carry in the surface protein gene of SARS-CoV-2, the viral cause of the pandemic; two of these have advanced to large-scale, phase III efficacy studies in Russia and Pakistan.
Probably because it was created in a lab and they were experimenting with many viruses known to be infectious in humans, to build this frankenstein virus.
He know it was a CCP frankenvirus. But he also knew what would happen if he said it too loud. That's not a fight for an old man on the way out in this world. RIP real scientist.
