It's perhaps... perhaps not a matter of Putin being a crazy madman. He honestly sees parts of Ukraine as where Russia was formed.
Historically, Russia has been attacked by Napoleon, during WWI, during WWII. So to let the Black Sea not become the NATO Sea.
Military strategy. This is another possibility. Pretty simple, and to put yourself in PUTin's shoes... something to consider.
The action done in Crimea in 2014 happened and the world has to live with that. That tiny piece of land needs to be seriously considered before any Country/government/region decides to mess with it.

If we were prepared to fight for Ukraine we would be fighting already. NATO membership is just a formality.
Of course I’m not sure what happens if we give NATO membership to a country already at war.
