Ukraine entered a second week of war against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invading forces with parts of the country’s largest nuclear plant on fire and its southern cities encircled by the Kremlin’s troops, as the humanitarian catastrophe wrought by Russia’s assault becomes increasingly apparent.

Later in the morning, Ukraine’s nuclear inspectorate said Russian forces had captured the plant, which is a key supplier of the country’s electricity. A regional military leader said nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia site was “ensured as of now,” while local authorities said the fire was extinguished as of 6:20 a.m. local time. Washington and Kyiv said there had been no increase in radiation levels.

No. The fire was contained in an administration building and has been extinguished. But that doesn't mean the dangers and threat of serious problems at the reactors have been eliminated. This Russian shelling and military tank shooting and fighting operations around nuclear reactors are not a good combination. Many nuclear experts are explaining that major questions after this fire, caused by Russian shelling, persist. Whether there was any damage to the water pumps used to cool the reactors? Whether the connection to the grid had been cut? Whether transmission lines were intact? The significance of the last 2 means is there power to run those pumps that are necessary to cool the reactors? and on and on.

Certainly most of us have learned enough about this basic knowledge throughout the years re Chernobyl, the Japan plants after the earthquake and then subsequent tsunami for example and even in Pennsylvania at Three Mile Island ( geez I guess that last one really dates me).

Anyway, attacking civilian nuclear power plants like this is against International Law.( Check out IAEA: International Atomic & Energy Administration) Russia is a signatory to that convention. This is just another reckless and ruthless act of war that violates international norms and laws by the megalomaniac and barbaric Vlad the Invader. The Kremlin & Putin's Russia, unprovoked, have declared and mounted this massive war of atrocious aggression, combative terror and despicable destruction with the intent to erase the nation of Ukraine, an independent neighbor country. Full Stop.

Russian forces seize Ukrainian nuclear power plant after shelling sets it on fire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in a video message that an explosion at the plant could spell the “end of Europe,” accusing Russian soldiers of shooting at the reactors purposefully.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russian forces had surrounded and fired on the Zaporizhzhia site. “Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!” he said on Twitter.

Ukraine’s nuclear inspectorate said Russian forces had captured the plant, which is a key supplier of the country’s electricity. A regional military leader near the plant said nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia site was maintained when the local authorities extinguished the fire as of 6:20 a.m. local time Friday.

Before the Russian military takeover, a spokesman for the Zaporizhzhia plant said in an email that the site had been “under artillery fire” since 1:40 a.m. local time and confirmed that fires had broken out. Only one of the plant’s six reactors was still generating power for the grid, the spokesman said. Before the Russian invasion, 15 reactors around Ukraine supplied half the country’s electricity.

Russia seizes nuclear plant as fire extinguished

A regional military leader in Ukraine, Oleksandr Starukh, said on social media that the head of the plant “assured that the nuclear safety of the facility is ensured as of now” but added that the situation “remains extremely complicated.”

Ukrainian firefighters struggled to access the nuclear plant because of Russian shelling in the area, according to a senior Ukrainian government official.

Zelensky spoke by phone about the fire with President Biden and European Union officials, a Ukrainian official said. The White House confirmed the call. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also spoke with Zelensky, his office said.

Default This type of warfare near a nuclear power plant breaks international law and norms

True, because the power plant/reactor that was shelled is closer to Russia than Poland.

This type of warfare near a nuclear power plant breaks international law and norms, but it is Putin's war, right? This entire and unprovoked war of his breaks international law. He is reckless in pursuit of his personal mission, and this is one more example of his disloyalty to and disregard for his own citizens. The achievement of his anti-democratic, megalomaniacal goals at any cost. Putin's personal aims are paramount to those of the people of Russia let alone to all of humanity. Vlad the invader is a threat to all of us...to all of mankind's freedoms and democracy.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Putin has shown the world over and over again who he is...evil.

Believe the good men and women of the nations who are showing us who they are by their tireless and determined efforts and endeavors to prevent Putin's evil from triumphing...this includes genuine journalists and long respected and esteemed news organizations as well as the knowledgeable and hard working heads of state and their diplomatic and intelligence and military professionals.

Welcome to C-D. You just joined this month and already over 200 posts.

Of course, Russia does not need the world to survive. It can likely get on just fine trading with China and North Korea.

I thought the Russian Mafia was supposed to be so tough and ruthless - couldn't they get to Putin and shove him off a high-rise building? Or are they on his side?

As bad as it could be if/when Russia succeeds in taking Ukraine; does anyone think Putin will be satisfied? I think he's got a bad case of the Hitlers and wants more, wants to rebuild the Soviet Union of his childhood or whatever (to mix historical metaphors). Ukraine is a 21st century Warsaw Ghetto, holding out against tremendous odds and in all likelihood doomed.

It's awful; just awful. If we knew the stakes, shouldn't we (American presidents, leadership) have done something before now?

Putin sent a Ukraine nuclear plant on fire with the intention to cause radiation casualties inside NATO territory ?

I believe it is more of a message Russia is sending to our Military strategists.

We do not want this land. We want the NATO Influences to stay far away from our borders.

You trade in your American Dollars . We trade in our Rubles. Plain and simple.

It would also spread radiation over neighbouring Russia and Belarus, and beyond those countries, the brunt of it would be felt by Eastern Europe rather than the West.

It is still Russia's fault for choosing this war, but I get your point.

The USA isn't innocent in this either.

We just spent years hysterically freaking out over Facebook posts with Blueanon theories where most Democrats in polls believe Russia changed vote totals, of pee tapes with hookers, and that Trump had been groomed since the 1980s.

What does Russia think as we hysterically lied and exaggerated and all when no country comes close to the US in toppling foreign governments and influencing elections, we altered the 1996 Russian election, we did more than Facebook posts in the 2011 Russian election, had a sitting president in 2012 promise Putin more flexibility after the 2012 election despite having already attacked Georgia, that same president threatened British voters with less trade if they voted for Brexit, get involved in Syria to simply try to get Russia's ally and Mediterranean naval base removed, and finally we actively encouraged Ukraine to do things that Putin said they'd consider an act of war.

P.S. we are still today doing more than Facebook posts all over the world to influence politics.

lol all that overwrought hand wringing over a conflict in an area you know nothing about.
do you suppose whatever happens between Russia and Ukraine will be worse than two years of devastating covid mandates that happened right here?
