Russia has been in Cuba and Venezuela for years. The Wall Street Journal is an expensive paper, but they do have dedicated Journalists in certain areas Central America is one of them. You have to read and speak the language to really understand what’s going on.
I’m pretty sure regular posters are fully aware of the Ideology of other frequent posters. You are talking about Trump, I’m talking about National Security .
The UN Security Council has been in Emergency Sessions for days now. I haven’t bothered to go look at what they are doing/saying because I know their hands are tied.
Russia is the Chair of the UN Security Council AND a permanent Member with VETO Power.
They are all a toothless, useless bunch — they can do nothing even if the Russian Chair’s Country just Invaded a Neighbor and is killing the Citizen of the Country they are now bombing.
NATO & the United Nations are useless, and are nothing more than Money Vacuum's.
Thousands of Russians protesting Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
Nobody on the planet wants this except Pooptin and his fellow KBG extremists. And maybe Xi.
And we have to be careful to not push Russia into China’s arms. China is invading Taiwan airspace now, they feel emboldened. We need to be smart and decisive right now, we obviously don’t want war, it would be devastating.
MAD only works when both parties have some kind of respect for the other. When one party knows the other is a pansy that won't actually do anything, it fails.
I have been thinking about this a lot. You are right. Any appearance of weakness is an invitation for the other side to escalate. When Biden told the world the USA won't get involved, that is a sign of weakness and surrender that the madman Putin was looking for. He invaded to weaker neighbor like the Nazis did in WWII while the West is debating silly sanctions.
In a nuclear war both Russia and the West would be destroyed. However, Russia has a lot less to lose. In other words, Russia is poorer than the West. The psychology here is would the West be willing to give up what they have to destroy Russia? The answer is no. Would Russia be willing to give themselves up in order to destroy the the West? The answer is probably yes because they have less to lose. It's like a suicide terrorist with a bomb strapped to himself. He knows he will get killed but he can destroy more than what he loses.
"While Washington has yet to confirm details of the latest measures, Biden has already announced sanctions on VEB bank and Russia's military bank, referring to Promsvyazbank, which does defence deals.
The U.S. Treasury Department said: "All assets under U.S. jurisdiction will be immediately frozen and U.S. individuals and entities are prohibited from doing business."
"The United States, the EU and Britain have already imposed asset freezes, travel bans and other curbs on Russian individuals."
"The United States and the EU already have sanctions in place on Russia's energy and defence sectors, with state-owned gas company Gazprom, its oil arm Gazpromneft and oil producers Lukoil, Rosneft and Surgutneftegaz facing various types of curbs on exports/imports and debt-raising.
Sanctions could be widened and deepened, with one possible option being to prevent companies settling in U.S. dollars."
"The U.S. on Wednesday imposed sanctions on the company in charge of building Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline."
not exactly, if removed from the 'swift bank' russia would be unable to conduct ANY transactions, other than back alley cash. Biden refused. on camera.
biden said and I quote 'we will wait a month or so before...' watch it LIVE, well ok, recorded now. stop using what CNN wants you to know.
And, he paid the tab for 600 million barrels of oil TODAY and will do every day, increasing the amounts. tell me how, transfer of american dollars directly to putin, is a sanction? its $100+ per bbl, lets assume we get a putin/biden lovin discount and its only $100 per, that means we are giving him $50bn of american dollars ***A DAY***
And we have to be careful to not push Russia into China’s arms. China is invading Taiwan airspace now, they feel emboldened. We need to be smart and decisive right now, we obviously don’t want war, it would be devastating.
China wasn't emboldened. I guarantee Putin called XI ahead of time, told him to get his Taiwan game prepped because once he invades Ukraine, China will have a cakewalk in Taiwan, and oh yeah, we'll give you 10% off everything coming through the Power to Siberia pipeline for a year, just because we're buds.
While NATO is being made to look feckless, weak and ineffectual...why not do some random land grabs around the world? The EU can't afford to make Russia too mad, and the US sure as hell can't afford to make China mad. Putin didn't embolden China, the US addiction to tech made with rare earth metals and cheap labor did.
A country to keep a close eye on right now, just because they have a really interesting new power dynamic going on is Australia. I will be very interested to see how they weigh what's in their national interests against a truly feckless, toothless United States as an ally.
Wars are expensive and Russia is economically weak. I suspect Putin may have difficulty funding a lengthy major war with the Russian banking system being hit by sanctions. He's counting on a quick victory.
