Plus whatever regular Ukrainian troops were there with them - they wouldn't let them to surrender.

Azov would have shoot them first.

( Although from what I've heard, the majority of brigades that Ukrainian Army kept in Donbass region were one their best.)



And of course the civilians were kept in Mariupol hostage.



So as I've said Mariupol was a doomed city on many levels.

Did they matter to Obama's government when it went ahead with the "Ukraine as anti-Russia" project"?

Those "pockets" of Ukrainians sure are taking out a lot of Russian vehicles.

Here's my prediction. Within a week, Putin will give up on Kyev, all the Russian forces around Kyev will fall back to the south, and Russia will focus all forces on taking Odesa and other southern cities to gain control of the coast. Then will negotiate to end the war and keep as much of it as they can.

Ukraine is losing the air war though. Without long-range missiles, they can't stop Russian jets from bombing hospitals and residential areas.
