Im thinking VASTLY higher. Russia took Georgia in 2008 I think? And lost less then 200 dead on his side. It took 5 days, and they outnumbered Georgias full time military by 7-1 with the troops he used.
In 2014 when he took Crimea from Ukraine, and some of the eastern side of Ukraine he used a estimated 20-30K Russian troops, and another 30K or so of locals. Losing.....reportedly no Russian troops. vs a similiar sized opposition.
This is vastly different today. Ukraine has increased their military, and gotten a lot of weapons. And unlike Afghanistan, and other countries that Putin may have some experience with Ukrainians are putting up a strong fight. I believe they may get overwhelmed, but I also think this has already been on the worst case scenario side of things for Putin. Its gonna make Afghanistan look friendly.
The Ukrainians seem to be holding their own at the moment.
How long they can do this remains to be seen.
