So the real question becomes, how does US/NATO figure out a long term peace still strategy?
Russia and China will never tolerate NATO or western friendly countries bordering their country.
I don’t see a solution, I think the world is in big trouble.
The best solution would be Russia's failure.
Russia may have dreams of taking the Balkans, but it is only a dream. Look at the difficulty they are experiencing in taking a republic of Ukraine. If reports are to be believed, there are units who refused to fight and we know there are units which have been destroyed.
Ivan the Terrible tried to take Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania and failed in around 1600; Stalin made satellites of them, but that only lasted 50 years.
Peter The Great took part of Sweden to establish St Petersburg around 1750 and that allowed Russia to become a sea power, and now we are seeing the end of all that. Not the Russia will lose St Petersburg somehow -they won't. What will happen, I hope, is the draconian sanctions against Russia will destroy them financially, as they cope with a recession/depression at home while fighting a needless battle with an unwilling, poorly disciplined army. Navies are in need of constant repair and Russia's navy will simply wither away.
Ukraine requested help from the world's commercial satellite companies and got it. There is no significant move the Russians can make that could be made in secret. The world may get a little hungry as the wheat fields in Russia and Ukraine go untended, but in the end the destruction of Russia will have been worth it.
May they never recover!
I don't see Russia keeping this up for long on a $50 billion military budget, their GDP is about the same as Texas so how do they fund this. Already using antiquated and poorly maintained military equipment and begging for recruits for their poorly trained army.

the Lieutenant that was interviewed said it was shot down but still managed to release the cassette element
shot down means it did not hit it's target....means Donetsk was not the target

Might as well end sanctions when major countries, such as China and India don't join in. Might try ending sanctions as a condition for peace with a cease fire.
Ending this war quickly is the last thing the US wants.
The US wants to prolong this conflict as long as possible, even if it means the death of Ukrainian civilians.

If indeed UKR has been shelling Donbass/Luhansk region without ever taking any territory back, then they just doing it to cause sheer terror and make everyone miserable. That does sound like a legit reason to go in.
