Russia never expect that? They have seen it in Syria and Yemen on Western armor.
[So[/url]
What they were hoping for is for Ukraine to be less willing to fight. That I will agree disappointed them. That was due in part to Ukrainian killing Russian loyalists in the east like Mayors and other people that have power. Several of them just disappeared.
They did not see Javelin missiles in Syria, they are fighting a battle like it's 1980. They are putting fencing on their tanks and armor to lessen the damage from the Javelins. Their leadership was unprepared, they thought that 40 mile convoy would cause them to surrender. Their leadership is incompetent and reduced to killing civilians in a desperate hope that they will surrender.
They never had enough troops to defeat Ukraine let alone occupy.
Train station missile:
"For the children" is a reference to "The Alley of Angels."
When Ukrainian soldiers were captured, they would be taken to the Alley of Angels to witness what they had done. "For the children" became a taunt that the Ukrainian Azov forces would write on artillery shells.

Killing civilians on behalf of civilians killed. Inspiring future generations to again kill civilians.
Perpetrating a cycle of violence.
Yeah, I don't really think Ukrainians, who are defending themselves, or Russians, who are invading, are all that concerned about some "cycle of violence". That's more of a social thing.
Also, General Aleksander Dvornikov, who has vast experience in Syria in attacking poorly defended positions and loosely organized jihadist groups has been selected to re-organize the Russian attack.
He will, of course, be targeted by the Ukrainians. And probably half the Russian army, too!

So what - colonels get killed during wars if they are on the front lines - no mystery here.
What is a mystery to me though, is whom is it the Ukrainian forces ( and not only) are trying to rescue so persistently from Mariupol, which included French diplomatic efforts?
Who is it hiding on Azov Steel plant along with Azov Nazi Battalion, that yet another attempt was made yesterday to pull these people out of the bunkers via Azov sea?
If Russians ( who are tenaciously guarding all the exits from Mariupol's port at this point,) will get hold of those "someones" after all - it looks like yet another international scandal is in the making.
And since it were French diplomatic efforts that were involved in the rescue attempts before, I can only wonder whether Macron was only playing the role of the mediator.

The war was nearly over, Yakov Rezantsev assured his troops on day four of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials say he was the seventh Russian general to die in action in Ukraine; Western ones agree. You have to go back 80 years to find a remotely comparable attrition of senior officers.
That's why the death of a Russian colonel is important. It is a record-setting pace. Perhaps they are all incredible brave; perhaps they are all stupid; maybe their own men kill them. I dunno. At any rate it is record setting.
I hope the Ukrainians keep it up. Putin fired 8 generals so far.
So we have gone from don't worry they were only old tanks, never mind the three soldiers inside that blew up with it. To now don't worry it is only another tank regiment commander. No doubt there are many Lieutenant Colonels who dreamed of the job, assuming their vehicles were not hit and they are not among the three dead per tank, but just unreported due to their lower rank.
