I listened to the first 5 minutes as you asked. Trump clearly said "this is genius. Putin declares large areas of Ukraine are independent....I said, how smart is that...Here's a guy who's very savvy, I know him very, very well..."
So what is the disconnect between what the media reported and what he actually said? I mean, you could say he was just being honest. After all, Hitler made some brilliant moves also. But you can't deny that Trump was gushing about what a smart guy Putin is.
Anyone who actually listened to what President Trump said, knows that he was taken out of context, as usual.
So he did NOT say that Putin's moves were genius, that he was a savvy guy?
