Why Kyiv instead of Kiev?
There many cities in the world that have different spelling...China and India have several. In Europe some have different spelling from Rome to Vienna...for example. Even some countries like Germany, Belgium and so on.

Kyiv is the Ukrainian name for the city.

It is not a 'media stunt'.

Rome = Roma (Italian)
Vienna = Wien (German)
Munich = Muenchen - sorry, cannot do umlauts on this device (German)
Warsaw = Warszawa (Polish)

And so forth...

And you must be new to the concept of "monkey see, monkey do." Because that is exactly what happened with the term, "vetted." Even Hannity used the damned word ten times every five minutes. So it wasn't just a leftist thing. The media seems to have this "word of the month" thing going on.

The reason for the variance is because there is not always a direct counterpart in sounds from one language to another. We had that problem for years with Khaddafi, Gaddafi, Qadafi. The people I know living in Kiev pronounce it Keeve as best I can discern with my Western ears. But other languages often have slight tonal variations that many cannot detect.

Yes it is. Because NONE of them pronounced it that way until recently. In fact, I heard a news story yesterday where two newscasters were talking... one pronouncing the old (accepted in English) way and one pronouncing it the new (cool) way. I'm sure the first newscaster is looking for a new job today.

Yes, that is the Ukrainian pronunciation whereas the Russian pronunciation is like 'KEY-yiff'.

All of this pales in comparison to the ultimate linguistic struggles of our times....

Well, in my lifetime we went from Peking to Beijing, Bombay to Mumbai, Calcutta to Kolkata, Burma to Myanmar. Moslems used to study the Koran, but now Muslims study the Quran.

Then i remember a few years back when the newscaster all had to pronounce "Nicaragua" with a very guttural G to show how hip they were
