Trump wasn't much better, and he got elected.

This is one thing we could probably agree on. A more adept politician may have been able to pacify Russia enough while still steering Ukraine on a westward trajectory.

I don't think he understood where the dangers are, not just with respect to Russia, but also within Ukraine. He also didn't understand the US agenda. He allowed Ukraine to be a pawn.
