NATO cannot operate effectively without shared sacrifice. Americans today would die facing the 1940s restrictions on consumer goods available for purchase.

The only countries left to realistically join in Europe are Sweden and Finland, the other nations not in NATO are either neutral, small principalities or are allied with Russia.
There have been suggestions in the past that NATO expand in to a western alliance, and includes the likes of Australia/NZ, Japan, South Korea etc.
