As a species, it’s insane the more I think about it. And we could all die just because a senior aged toddler on the other side of the world doesn’t get their way.

Well, look thru any world history book, plenty of examples of past 'empires' that grew to extreme power, but eventually fell. Nothing different going on today, same old game, its just 'man kinds nature'.

And all those that grew to extreme power had their absolute peak at some point — has the US reached it’s peak relative to the competition? I’m sure some will argue that peak was reached many decades ago.

Agreed. Humans are a stupid species. There should be no reason we need the threat of total annihilation to keep us in check.
