It's human nature to want to show group status via symbols...not just an elite thing. Think tattoos, piercings, jewelry, flags, circumcisions, etc. We are pack oriented animals looking for our group to "fit in" with.

I will fill in the piece of information that you are missing completely - that is the public hate campaigns/attacks on Ukrainian athletes unleashed in Ukraine, that dared even to shake hands with Russians when sharing podium.

That was long BEFORE any invasion.


The Russian gymnast apparently is sending a signal now to his Ukrainian counterpart - "don't even bother any longer." (Since all Russian military vehicles present in Ukraine now, are marked with the letter "Z")
