He started with just a modest claim on e neighboring country where a German-speaking minority was being discriminated against. The another small slice, then another, then when he was feeling secure that no alliances would aid the smaller neighboring states, he moved to open warfare.

Putin has been nibbling at Ukraine since 2014. Basically, WW2 started and ended (as far as Europe was concerned) in the same time span that Putin has been messing around in Ukraine. So Putin has an awful lot of work ahead of him if he is to catch up to Hitler and officially tickle the pickles of American liberals from east coast to west.
But unlike Hitler ...Putin could kill us all in about 38 minutes.
And we could kill him back. It's called MAD (mutually assured destruction) and is the reason we haven't had a direct war between the superpowers.
However, if we assume the leaders of both superpowers to be rational (maybe a false assumption), then neither country would be the first to launch nuclear weapons. It would be the very last resort. Like maybe if we had Moscow surrounded and about to take Putin captive he would launch. But if we fight the Russians in Ukraine and it goes badly for him he can always retreat back to Russia. As long as we didn't take the fight into Russian soil there would be no reason to start a nuclear holocaust.
Think once - what if Russia decided it wanted to take back Alaska? Surely we would fight them for it, but if we were losing I think we would give it to them before we would launch ICBMs.
I see a repeat of 1945. Stalin sat outside Warsaw as Hitler destroyed the Polish resistance. Then inserting a puppet gov't.
We sit outside Ukraine and watch Putin destroy and kill the resistance. The insert a puppet govt.
We should be giving them air support at the least.

Then if that's what it takes to defeat this madman, so be it. Let the other countries of the world stomp him out before he can do more damage and destroy more lives and countries.
How? Putin is a tough country in their region not the world. China is by far more dangerous because not only they have the military and nukes but the economy that is tied to the U.S. and they can cripple us.
China is much more dangerous. Of course. But Putin is like Hitler. And he is primarily a problem for Europe not us.
I'm not sure it matters. There are probably many similarities between ruthless, power-hungry autocrats. It's just the nature of the leadership.
