Psychological studies have shown that being offered a pay actually makes you LESS likely to want to do something, if you were already interested in doing it. So long as the pay is less than what you think it / your time is worth.
But as far as working for a pillar-of-the-US-empire company because they pay more? That’s a serious morality issue. Unless you go cognitively dissonantly liberal and just abdicate morals.
I worked because I needed necessities in life. Some jobs I loved, some I only liked, some I hated. Were it not for needing money to survive, I wouldn't have worked any of them without pay.
Doing a job you are not paid for is called a hobby. It says you like the work enough to do it for free. Not working full time for free at a job that makes money for your employer says you are not stupid.
I run a charter boat and I detail boats. I love fishing and will go "fun" fishing whenever I have the time if it is good even though that is my job.
I also enjoy being outside when cleaning boats and like having my own schedule.
Yep, I consider myself lucky that for the last 30 years I have enjoyed my career choice as I get payed doing what I love.
Yep....get paid.
There is no way in hell I'd take strangers on my boat fishing for free. None. The cost of all tackle, bait, maintenance, insurance, fuel, boat payment, down payment, mate, slip fees and more are built into the cost of the trip. Of course so is a profit so I can pay for my living expenses, vacations, truck, health insurance, house, etc...
As far as cleaning boats? Again, no way in hell I'd voluntarily clean peoples boats for free. I am cleaning them for a profit as well as supplies. I'm not paying for buffers, polishers, pads, rags, waxes, compounds, cleaners, liability insurance, and more out of my pocket. It all is in the price of a cleaning..
Its amazing how many people try to bring me down on price thinking its a hobby of mine.
Nope, I would not do anything for free. My clients are paying for my time plus ALL expenses.
I don't know, but the premise of the OP makes very little sense. Most people don't love their jobs enough to do them for free. Most people can't afford to work for free at a job they do love. Maybe wealthy people can, but everyone else needs to make a living.
Well, I took pictures and video before I became a local TV news photographer and I still take pictures and video now that I am not a local TV news photographer.
